Performance:   Sonics:
This is one of the great classics of the EMI catalogue and arguably the greatest stereo studio recording ever made of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. It is stately, powerful and beautifully played, although the solo vocal performances are not quite on the same level as the choral and orchestral contributions. This could be the finest performance Klemperer left. Certainly no other recording of this work released in SACD comes close. The RBCD 2001 Great Recordings of the Century CD is excellent, and may be a tad cleaner in the lower frequencies, but does not come close to this SACD release in capturing the unique sound of London's Kingsway Hall, EMI's most famous classical recording site, where this was recorded. The 60's HMV LPs may combine the virtues of the SACD and GROC issues just a bit better, but go find them. Maybe, of all the EMI SACD reissues, this is the most valuable.
