Performance:   Sonics:
Like Toto's "IV", Sony re-released Billy Joel's "52nd street" with this mutli-channel/stereo release. Like other Sony re-releases, the disc features an improved stereo mix. The original stereo release was my very first SACD purchase. And based on that version, I agree with the sonics review from Tom's review.

However, the stereo version is much improved on the re-release. Better bass, better detail and a cleaner sound then the first disc. As far as the multi-channel track, I feel this disc really shines. Overall, the mix is aggressive, with all the speakers getting into the action. The whole piece opens up in a way that makes the old sound new.

As for the music, there are some of my favorite tracks here. "My life" still brings back memories of Bossom Buddies for me. Some solid rockers ("Half a mile away" and "Stileto"), some of his best ballads ("Until the night" and "Honesty") as well as the latin feeling "Rosalinda's Eyes". Frankly only the title track fails to impress. Although I enjoy "The Stranger" more, this is a solid release.

Performance:   Sonics:
I like Billy Joel and this album has 4 or 5 very good hits/songs. Unfortunately, I don't care much for the others and the album only has 9 songs, so the 5 hits only work out to about 20 minutes of good music. In addition, the sonics of the SACD are better than the CD, but only marginally. I don't think this album was well recorded and SACD can't fix a poor master tape. The music doesn't seem as clean, dynamic, or extended as one would expect from SACD.

Looking at 88.2/24 digital conversions of the Stereo DSD, it shows that there's plenty of content extending to 29khz or so. Very much the same as The Stranger. The sonics are near-identical, too. Very tight but rather pithy and grainy.

I compared it to the Audio Fidelity HDCD disc, which is complete sonic mud. However, it does reveal a fundamentally punchy, but grainy master recording.
