Performance:   Sonics:
I was extremely excited to have two previously unrecorded Shostakovich Symphonies on SACD, but this seems to be a PCM release remastered, not DSD as many of the Exton titles. The sound is good, but not outstanding. The surround is used for ambiance only, which to my mind is a good thing, but the sound is plain and doesn't have any spcial qualtities. The performances are good without being exceptional: the 1st is on the slow side and to my mind misses the humor intherent in the work. The 15th is better. There is some great, characterful playing from the woodwinds and the brass, especially in the middle movements, but the strings aren't as fine as I would have expected from a front-rank Russian orchestra, and the solo cello sounds as if he is having trouble with his solo lines.
