This was my first Linn SACD and first ever solo recorder disc.
I will first start with Pamela Thorby's extreme virtuosity. Clearly this musician is a true master of her instrument and plays with incredible finesse!!! BRAVO!!!!!! I cannot imagine a more polished performance than what Pamela Thorby gives here!!! It is also nice to mention that it sounds like she is actually having fun!!!!
Now, the sound is indeed a bit close miked, forcing me to turn down the volume a bit, but not too bad. I do wish that we could have had a better sense of venue, but then again, I do not know what the venue was, other than the fact it was done at The National Center for Early Music, York. In a studio??? In a concert hall??? Hard to tell!!!
I wish that the mikes could have been backed up a bit as the orchestra can sometimes be a bit on the "cloudy" side, though it is not as bad as I have heard on other recordings of Baroque music.
So, HIGH marks for some superb playing, but a few notches down for the orchestra/miking.
Cheers,
