for those who have been following the esoteric "remasters" thread, the inevitable and trepidatious question arises:

what have these new universal japan SACDs been remastered FROM? original studio tapes? or, as it seems is the Esoteric practice, merely from the standard RBCD mastering?

I do not know, - and apologize in advance for chiming in with perhaps uninformed speculation. But, since these discs will not be multi-channel like Gaucho; they are taken from the DSD conversions at that time. The DSD multi-channel files were lost, - but not the stereo. So, I assume that Universal got a hold of/leased the stereo DSD files and will press them to SHM tech.

Which would make sense for the high price of these things. As the SHM-SACD is highly hyped and other SHM discs go for more money.

From what I have read on various sites, the Multi channel tapes are missing for 2 of the songs on AJA. Unless these have mysteriously appeared, there cannot be a complete 5.1 mix of this title. AFAIK, there has not been a DSD mastering of Aja, so this would be the first.

I made an error, sorry.

I assumed that there was a DSD mastering of Aja, - at the same time that Gaucho was redone. However, - it is the two songs mastered to 5.1 DTS (Black Cow, and Aja), that went missing. I would love to hear how Gaucho sounds in DSD/multichannel: i have a feeling that this is a better recording than DSOTM or Tubular Bells, - which are novelties and really hurt the cause, - IMO.

I am also surprised that they're bothering to re-do an already excellent SACD of Getz Gilberto.

It's not like they made a 5.1 DTS mix of the whole album and two tracks of that went missing. Instead, when they wanted to do so they disocovered the multitrack masters of two of the songs were AWOL.

There are already *two* remasters of that album. Indeed, why not one of the many other excellent Getz albums?

I know that "Aja" is a very popular choice for many, but for me, as a long time Steely Dan fan I wish that some of their other titles would get some of the same white glove treatment that Aja receives. I bought every Steely Dan LP when first released, and I would love to see a first class reissue of Countdown to Ectasy, which I think may be their finest effort - I have often described it as "cinematic". An amazing record and one that for me easily tops Aja.

Hello,

I appreciate your opinion, but I think that Aja is Steely Dan's most popular and best reviewed work. I may be wrong about that. For me, the combination of songwriting, meticulous attention to detail, performances, and the mega-star musicians make Aja far and away number 1. I mean Steve Gadd and Wayne Shorter on the same song? Even with the cardboard drums, it's one of my favorite jazz/rock hybrid songs.

As I said with the AP jazz reissues, the more people that pony up, the more companies will be willing to risk creating new product. I'll be happy to purchase Aja and hope that more SD work is released in SACD!
