Just curious, did anyone notice the high noise level on track 16 of disc 1?
Is it because the noise floor of recording site? but seems other tracks are fine.
The SACD layer is less noisier than the RBCD layer, even more weird.
I don't believe this is due to the noise shaping in the DSD process.

btw, the track list is not correct.

An altogether glorious recording/performance and this 2-disc Hyperion set is being offered at a 20% discount from Crochet thru the end of April. And be mindful that Hyperion is No longer producing SACDs so once they're gone, one will be paying a premium through e-bay and other vendors.

I've had this disc perhaps year and a half or so now, but can't say I've noticed the noise you mentioned. I'll make a note of the track and disc, and make a point over the weekend of listening out for what you've mentioned. I'll report back.

I also hadn't noticed that the track list is incorrect - there you go! No marks to me for observancy!

I've listened to track 16 alone and in context several times this morning and can't discern any change in the noise level. Musically, however, track 16 (Zadok the Priest) involves quite a significant change from anything else on disc 1 and especially from the preceding track. From track 15 to track 16 the music changes from a hymn sung by the congregation with organ to an anthem sung by the choir supported by the full orchestra. The result is a total change in perspective (the accurate rendering of spatial cues being one of the strong points of the set), texture, and timbre. In other words track 16 sounds completely different from what immediately precedes it, so much so that it sounds like a different recording of different forces in a different venue, which, in a sense, it is.

Oh, I guess it's because I'm listening on headphone...

I agree very much with a lot of what Bill Hecht has said. I'm glad I listened to this again, as I do find it a wonderful set of music. Listening to it, gives me a real sense of the venue, i.e. a large church with a realistic echo quality. I listened to it both in hi-res MCH mode (which is definately my favourite), and as CD. I am unable to discern any difference in noise level - or anything else. I haven't done any hi-res to non hi-res comparisons for a long time, but I was pleased to discover how easy it was to tell the difference this afternoon between the two layers I listened to. Both my wife and I agreed on this. On a slightly different note, we also listened to Zedok the Priest on the Ode to St Cecilia's Day SACD. Again, both my wife and I agreed that the version on the Hyperion Coronation of King George II version was our favourite. Interesting also that it's about a minute longer than the swiss version. I felt very patriotic this afternoon, telling my Hungarian wife that listening the Haendel's Zedok the Priest makes one proud to be English! She agreed!

I had a look at the track list also, but was unable to see an error. Where do you feel the listing is incorrect? I know that the front of player names don't show as complete as the sleeve (or on screen) notes, but apart from that looked OK.

The music is great. In fact, I used Zadok the Priest in my own wedding ceremony.
The difference between SACD layer and CD layer are quite easy to pick up.
Regarding the noise level, if you use headphone, you would notice it easily on the CD layer.

Yes - the music is really very grand. Majestic, powerful and moving. You must have had a very interesting wedding ceremony! An unusual choice - at least as best as I know - but definately individual.

Since getting into hi-res MCH music, I've used headphones less and less. I got the impression that I was actually hearing less - rather than more. Perhaps my headphones were not really up to much? I've since packed up my Sennheiser RS 45 headphones, and should try to sell them. Perhaps I should try headphones again some time.

Getting back to the Hyperion version of Zedok the Priest, I like very much the slow quiet build-up at the beginning - which I feel the Swiss Arts version lacks somewhat. My wife thought the Swiss chorus was weaker and less well matched from female to male members, giving a less powerful performance. I'm unable to phrase this as musically as my wife, but that's the feeling. I don't know if you know the film, but listening to Zedok the Priest always makes me think of "The Madness of King George".
