This one has been an audiophile classic for decades, and with good reason. Although the playing is a little schmaltzy, it is a lot of fun to listen to with friends, or as a divergence from the more complex music of Thelonious or Miles SACDs.

The new SACD remaster brings to light some major damage to the master tapes here and there, but it is a vast improvement over Winston Ma's earlier XRCD version since the master tape has been biased correctly here (where it wasn't on the XRCD).

Enough has previously been written about the performance over the years so I will just comment on the sound quality of the SACD in 2 Channel.

As described in the accompanying notes Gert Palmerantz the recording engineer approached this project with a passion seldom encountered in a commercial recording. What I think he wanted to convey to the listener is a sense of realism and the feeling of actually being at the venue rather than experiencing it through a “sonic window” and IMHO that is exactly what was accomplished. If more recording engineers could put as much dedication and passion into their work we would all benefit greatly.

So, go ahead and: Dim the lights.....crank it're there! Enjoy the experience!

This is a fantastic title.

The music is great - not too complicated and not too boring.

Sonics is top class.

I listened to the Pawnshop severeal times by high resolution stereo files (2x HD mastered) - DSD 64 which is stored on SACDs. In my opinion puttin' files like these through a high quality DAC by using the asynchronous mode can be an even better expereience than to listen to a stereo SACD. The buffer can be filled without problems and to fake a recording is not that easy - just my opinion.
Jazz At The Pawnshop is gloriously recorded. Start e. g. with 'Jeep's Blues' and go on at a low volume level so you can check out the sensitivity of your speakers by listening to incredible saxophone parts. Or listen to the 'Limehouse Blues' at a high volume to get the dynamics. The mood is incredible. Recorded in 1976 at the Jazzclub Stampen in Stockholm - it's still alive to be visited - this is an expression of best sound mastering and a high quality original recording from nearly four decades ago.
To me it sounds a bit like a tend-to-be-forgotten-art of sensitive recording in contrast to loudy recordings. Absolutely worth hearing.
