This is one of my top SACD reissues so far. Ultimately it is not a premium-grade recording but it is a great example of just how much the SACD process can do from an old master tape. I have heard original, and reissue LPs of this recording as well as the regular CD version and this one puts them all to shame. By ultimate standards the recording is a little bright but the SACD truly makes it listenable. More than any other title so far, this one proves to me that SACD has a place for serious Jazz collectors. Most of us will never be able to afford or to find originals of this album or others like it and SACD now gives us an equivalent or better audio presentation at an affordable price.

When I first listened to this SACD on my previous beginners model SONY SACD player I was disappointed: Too bright, almost unbearable, no matter what layer I chose. On my new Marantz SCD-7000ki it sounds okay - I have learned my lesson as far as the influence of playback equipment is concerned. Still, the treble register could be less emphasized, the vibes have an almost crystalline sound, the alto sax is rather too metallic - listen to the cymbals and snare drum and you get the idea.
The session itself was a great one, the combination of two giants of soulfulness in jazz, Cannonball and Bags, one of producer Keepnews' masterstrokes. There are better sounding Riverside sessions, but the room ambience is much better audible on this SACD remastering. Vibes and alto sax are upfront before the rhythm section farther into the room. Dynamics are wider than on the Original Jazz Classics CD.

Firstly this is superb music and a wonderful performance, which explains why I have this on vinyl and SACD. And it gets 5 stars for this.

I have spent some time listening to this SACD, comparing it to the CD layer and the vinyl version, with a friend who is also into audio. We find the CD layer sounds more like the record, with the SACD layer sounding far too bright in my system. This must be one of the very few SACD's that sound worse than the CD layer. Most SACD's in my system (I have nearly 600) trounce the CD layer.

Personally I prefer the vinyl, smoother and more realistic sounding in every way, followed by the CD, flatter but listenable, the SACD is just too bright and uncomfortable to listen too.

My turntable cost less than half the SACD player, and I don't generally find it is bright at all, in fact I usually prefer SACD (and sometimes CD) to vinyl.
