Beethoven: Diabelli Variations - Jan Michiels      (6 of 7 found this review helpful)

DIABELLI VOLUME II There is more to the Diabelli Variations than just Opus 120…. Despite the Italian name, Anton Diabelli was born near Salzburg in 1781. He first trained for the priesthood, then defrocked for a career in music. As did many others (e.g. von Weber, Assmeyer, Wölfl), he studied with ... more

DIABELLI VOLUME I If you have the piano-tuner in to crank up the old Bechstein, be sure to count your change…. Marco Alcantara did an interesting thing with this disc: he seized upon the opportunity to work with Scott Kuhn of the Piano Technicians Guild, and thus present us with Beethoven’s Op. ... more

WORKING MY WAY THROUGH THE FONÉS No. 2 I confess, I am VERY fond of Verdi's Quartetto in mi minore. He must have been saying to himself for years if not decades, "One of these days I'm going to write a quartet", the way you or I might say "One of these days I'm going to get a gym membership and ... more

WORKING MY WAY THROUGH THE FONÉS No. 1 I was intrigued by Arnaldo's review of -- in his words -- "Baroque Concertos for Reverberation and Multiple Reflections from Pergolesi's time". This is the period when composers were writing works for multiple choirs in opposite corners of echo-enhancing ... more

I am amazed to see seven SACD recordings of this... this -- what word to use? -- work. Many have called it 'academic', others 'theoretical'... no-one calls it 'dramatic' or 'romantic'. In truth it can be excruciatingly dull; I know this from having sat through a moribund 'live' performance by string ... more

Interesting... I A/B sampled Ctos 1 and 5 on JPC: The Savall seems to be historically pitched, vs modern pitch for Fasolis. --And oh my! The Fasolis horns are remarkably up-front in the opening of Cto 1, sounding like solo improvisations. Quite different interpretations. ... more

Thank you Über for mentioning 'niche': A well-adapted organism is one which has found its niche. I like this niche and prefer it to being spread thin across the vast waste-lands of the mass market. By analogy, I do not regard single-malt Islay scotch as an unsuccessful beverage because I can't buy it at the corner store. The only things limiting ... more

Chamomile tea: should be on the list of banned mind-altering substances, but it isn't. I'd been mainlining Sumatra dark-roast all day and needed to descend to less turbulent altitudes. Oh yeah, and a quick shot of Smokehead 10 year-old on the way out the door (wife was designated dessicated driver). ... more
