Strauss: Ein Heldenleben, Webern: Im Sommerwind - Haitink        (2 of 6 found this review helpful)
  November 19, 2015

Strauss's "Ein Heldenleben" tells a story of the strong hero which finally leaves the world with the moving farewell. This SACD was my first impression of the work - before that the tone poem was really unknown for me. Bernard Haitink is one of the greatest Strauss-conductors today - his earlier ... more
Richard Strauss: Alpine Symphony, Four Last Songs - Luisi        (2 of 5 found this review helpful)

For me, Richard Strauss's (1864-1949) "Eine Alpensinfonie" is an staggering orchestral adventure on the mountains. The huge score contains nearly 130 instruments - such as organ, wind machine, cowbells, offstage brass band and thunder machine. Staatskapelle Dresden has a long tradition with the ... more
Liszt: Piano Concertos - Kantorow, Kantorow        (2 of 6 found this review helpful)

Jean-Jacques Kantorow has done many excellent recordings for BIS. His team - Tapiola Sinfonietta - is light-sounding chamber orchestra - there are only nearly 50 players. Now the conductor turns his view to Liszt's Piano Concertos. The soloist is here his son, the 17-years old Alexandre Kantorow. ... more
Mahler: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 10 (Adagio) - Gergiev          (2 of 4 found this review helpful)
  October 12, 2015

Mahler's Second Symphony is my own favorite: its spiritual message is always topical. The huge score contains off-stage brass band, organ, two soloists, chorus and orchestra. The world premiere performance in Berlin in 1896 was general success. This SACD set has been recorded in 2008 at the ... more

Compared to Gergiev's earlier account with the Wiener Philharmoniker (Philips), this updated Mariinsky approach is little bit better, but just little. PERFORMANCE The first work of the disc is the familiar "Pictures at an Exhibition", orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. I found many things to enjoy ... more

Thanks, Derek! I have listened the sound samples from the internet with my headphones and the acoustics of the concert hall - Mahler's Tenth - was quite dry. I guess that on surround the rears will not give more ambience for me. Or, what do you think? ... more
Mahler: Symphony No. 10 (performing version by N. Samale and G. Mazzuca): full orchestral score
November 26, 2015
Hi! I know that this site is perhaps a wrong place for this thread but I found the full score of the Mazzuca's version of Mahler's Symphony No. 10 here: http://catalog.nypl.org/search/o78172230. Do you have any idea where can I order the score? I want to buy the SACD http://sa-cd.net/showtitle/5261 and the score at the same time. It is ... more
