Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 - Kertesz    (10 of 11 found this review helpful)
  March 14, 2009

This first Kertesz-version of the „New World” with the Vienna Philharmonic is familiar to me for many years. For me it always has been the benchmark for the following recordings. When the young Kertesz made his first recording for Decca, he must have been in a very self-confident, powerful and agile ... more
Tchaikovsky, Grieg: Piano Concertos - Shimizu, Kobayashi        (4 of 4 found this review helpful)
  October 6, 2006

Kazune Shimizu is a pianist whom I only know from his Chopin-Interpreations, also on the Triton-Label. I like these recordings very much, so I had a try with this coupling of these often-recorded romantic "warhorses". And I was not disappointed. Shimizu has a romantic, but a clear and not distending ... more
Strauss: Waltzes - Kreizberg        (7 of 7 found this review helpful)

I highly acclaim this release, because I missed a good DSD-recording of the Strauß-Walzer. Concerning the sound all is said in the above review: One of the best PentaTone-recordings, warm and full, compared for example with the new Schostkowitsch or the Mozart violin concertos, which sound a bit ... more
Mozart: Wind Concertos - Concertgebouw Chamber Orchestra        (3 of 4 found this review helpful)
  December 25, 2005

Vivid interpretations of these lovely concertos, also with enough sentiment and warmth. Futhermore I have no severe complaints regarding the sound quality in stereo, maybe the soundstage a bit compact, but full bodied instruments with very natural timbre. IMO highly recommended!- My wishes for the ... more
Bach: Cello Suites - Hidemi Suzuki        (4 of 5 found this review helpful)
  December 3, 2005

I have to admit that I did hesitate a bit before ordering this double-SACD-set, because I own the Starker/Mercury version which is very good. And I did not know Hidemi Suzuki before, but now I do! After listening to the suites several times I can say, that this version is another favorite of mine. ... more

Esoteric releases in June 2013

Esoteric announces the two Brahms piano concertos on SACD. Perhaps the great Backhaus recording with the Vienna Philharmonic and Böhm as conductor is a good sign that Esoteric will release more Decca recordings. Did they get new licences after Universal Japan stopped the SHM-SACD-project ? Can I reanimate my hope that some day we get some of the ... more

Dear PentaMan, thanks for the information. So my listening experience seemed to be influenced by my expectations! Inspite of that, I am glad that you will continue recording in DSD. What I should add: The "Tannhäuser" is great in interpretation, I like it and can recommend it. Now I am looking forward to the "Ring" ... Anyway: Any chance for other ... more
PENTATONE THREAD

Dear PentaMan, I am fan of your recordings, buy most of them. But: Why did Pentatone record the latest Wagner Operas using PCM instead of DSD? I am a bit disappointed concerning the sound for example of Tannhäuser. Strings and vocals sound a bit more shrill compared with the Holländer (DSD). The latest recordings I got were the Liszt and the Bach. ... more
