Elvis Presley: Elvis 24 Karat Hits    (7 of 7 found this review helpful)
  November 29, 2012

Even after his death, Elvis continues to fascinate for his music as well as his career arc from premier Rock N Roll pioneer, to movie guy (I won't say "idol" because movies are not why he's an idol) to oldies/Vegas act to...well...you know how it ended. I was probably born 15 years too late to ... more
Pretenders: Learning to Crawl    (4 of 4 found this review helpful)
  November 4, 2012

One of the first titles I ever bought on the then new format of CD about 30 years ago was Learning to Crawl, and I thought it sounded great then. Miraculously, after all this time, I still have the CD somewhere, I just have to find it as I would love to do an A/B comparison. But not here, maybe I ... more
Dave Brubeck Quartet: Time Out      (10 of 10 found this review helpful)
  July 7, 2012

Hard to believe this was recorded in the late 50s. The sound is dynamic, and despite that there is almost no distortion from loudness of an instrument exceeding the recording capacity, which I have heard on some early recordings. Drums are particularly well rendered as evidenced by "Take Five" in ... more
Shelby Lynne: Just A Little Lovin'    (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
  June 18, 2012

A tribute to the late Dusty Springfield, the instrumentation is pared back to showcase the interpretations of these classics by Shelby Lynne. The feel is intimate and "live." The vocals are wonderful, which was a pleasant surprise since I don't know anything about Lynne as an artist. The band ... more
Linda Ronstadt: What's New      (1 of 2 found this review helpful)
  May 27, 2012

This SACD is an OK experience for me and could have been a lot better if there was better song variety. I found it to be a bit plodding after a while. It needs some toe tappers to go with the wrist cutters. Linda's voice dominates the mix, perhaps a bit too much. The orchestration doesn't seem now ... more

CD Players obsolete?
April 16, 2013
You might try looking at the oppo 103. It plays just about any disc you throw at it and for a lot of the electronic files you mention it can also serve as the DAC. There are reviews on line of the Oppo 103 so check around. I have the Oppo 93 and really have found it to be a good player. Also have the Marantz sa8004 and prefer the oppo. In fact the ... more
SACD Player with a built in pre-amp. What??

Good question Bicman, I am also curious about this. If you don't receive any responses here you could always try a google search of the web in general or talk to someone at a good hi fi store. ... more

I don't think it serves the participants of SA-CD.net to limit forum discussions and I believe having the forums is a valuable tool. Reading of Zeus's efforts to go multi channel, for example, have been a learning experience for me as well, even though I already have a multi-channel set up. I have enjoyed that thread immensely. I wouldn't abandon ... more
An interesting observation

Jona, I don't think he was directing this at you either. It seems to me he was indicating this to the forum at large. BTW, I re-read the last two of your reviews and I thought they were helpful, even in stereo, because you make some remarks about the performance itself. Didn't mark them as such though and perhaps I should have. ... more
Discussion: Sinatra's Swingin' Session
February 20, 2013
Swingin Session has been released so the release information needs to be updated to reflect that. This is a stereo recording from 1961. There will be 8 releases from Mofi covering some of Sinatra's greatest albums, several of which will be in mono. Here is a mini review: This is an incredibly well done remaster of this recording. It is as ... more
