This England - Kalmar        (1 of 13 found this review helpful)

The sound quality of this disc is as good as SACD gets - especially the cuts from Peter Grimes. Try cut 10 "Storm". RVW symphony No. 5 is a snooze at least to me. This disc was recorded, mixed and mastered in the USA. I would to see them start recording the many top notch orchestras in the United ... more

Whenever I see LSO Live I know the sound quality wiill be awful but then I read a good review and I buy the disc. It is not the halls fault. I have been in Barbican and the sound quality was magnificent - not at all dry. This disc in two channel was totally two dimensional. No depth at all. No ... more
Schumann: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 3 - Paavo Järvi        (6 of 17 found this review helpful)

This is a flat two dimensional, thin, somewhat bright sounding SACD. The interpretation is quite joyful although I am no Schumann expert but the sound is strikingly bad. I listen in two channel.
Richard Strauss: Josephs Legende - Fischer        (6 of 13 found this review helpful)

I purchased this based on the SACD.net reviews and the fact that I basically like Richard Strauss. This is definitely not first rate Strauss. There is little to distinguish the beginning from the middle and end of the piece. There is good reason that the piece has fallen out of favor. What was ... more

I almost did not buy this SACD because of the mixed reviews. Castor's review: "First, the sound quality is, for the most part, unappealing. It gives a harsh metallic edge to the strings, and climaxes are brash and sometimes congested, even in MC". This is one of the finest recordings I have ever ... more

What a pleasant surprise. Beautiful music, beautifully played and recorded. I listen in two channel. Interesting since the instrument placement is somewhat close horizontally but also has more depth than I am used to in a large chamber work especially on the Op. 71. Also pronounced midrange and bass. Thus a very warm recording. I loved it. ... more

This disc was a major disappointment in two channel SACD. Bright and thin. Sounds like DGG used to sound but with some deep bass thrown in. Lacks the sweetness that SACD is known for. Not a pure DSD recording? Has the digital irritation that early CDs were infamous for. Stick with the Reiner on vinyl or SACD. ... more
Some questions to those who play music on Sony SCD-XA5400ES .

I have had the player for six months. My system is high end and capable of producing bass to 25 cps. I initially used the player for RBCD but they basically still sounded edgy although better than any other RBCD player I had used. SACDs were a revelation. Excellent bass, dynamics and smooth upper frequencies. I have since purchased over 200 SACDs - ... more
