| Best Dopby recorders do reach close to 90 dB, but they came late in the game. Besides Dolby process is a dreaded dynamic compression/expansion system, a lot of heavy handed signal manipulation, far removed from "pure" silky "analogue", the Holy Grail for some. | Typical analog tape has about 70 dB of dynamic range, and good digital has 120 dB. 120 dB-70dB = 50 dB. That means 10^5 = 100000 times smaller details can be described in digital signal.
