Mozart, Brahms: Clarinet Quintets - Steffens, Scharoun Ensemble      (6 of 6 found this review helpful)
  March 28, 2008

The two greatest clarinet chamber works in the repertoire, perhaps the two greatest chamber works of either composer. Karl-Heinz Steffens has a beautiful, liquid tone which is just a joy to listen to, and the Scharoun Ensemble are fully equal partners. Unfortunately if you play the Brahms at a ... more
Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique - Davis      (7 of 9 found this review helpful)
  March 26, 2008

Like me I suppose a lot of readers had this on CD and bought it to see how much improvement there was in the master tapes. Well there is an improvement, but unfortunately I can't summon as much enthusiasm for the sound as the other reviewers. This was recorded in 1974 and it would be idle to ... more
Mirror Canon - Tor Espen Aspaas      (8 of 8 found this review helpful)
  March 25, 2008

In my listening room I have an upright Hoelling & Spangenberg, so I know how a piano should sound (though I wish it was a Steinway...). I've been on a vain search for a recording that properly reproduces the full sound of a piano - this disc probably comes the closest so far. Jonty put it correctly ... more
Haydn: String Quartets - Amsterdam String Quartet        (3 of 4 found this review helpful)
  February 29, 2008

I love this disc but not the programming! I am a typical collector, and would much prefer complete opuses to be recorded in the string quartet repertoire rather than selections. Having said that we are tempted in the liner notes with a statement that they will perform all the quartets in 2009. ... more
Chopin: Piano Sonatas - Artur Pizarro      (1 of 1 found this review helpful)
  February 23, 2008

After my excoriation of the sound in Pizarro's Ravel disc I'm happy to report the sound here is excellent. At 9'30" he is extremely ruminative in the supreme masterpiece of the Barcarolle. Argerich seemed to have put a turbocharger on her gondola; I wish Pizarro had a stronger profile here. ... more

Dear Stevie thank you for your honest and oh so true review - I've been laughing for the last 5 minutes! Remember of course Beecham was asked about Stockhausen once. He replied he'd thought he'd stepped in some once... N ... more
Where are the preludes?
August 28, 2009
I just noticed "Ustvolskaya: Complete Works for Piano - Sabine Liebner" in the new releases. It got me wondering: where are the preludes on SACD? Here's three as a starter: Chopin, Debussy and Rachmaninov. The Chopin has a few Japanese releases and an old Arrau, but what about new releases? What about say, Sudbin in the Rachmaninov (that was for ... more
