Schoenberg: Gurrelieder - Esa-Pekka Salonen      (8 of 11 found this review helpful)

* Performance: I am in full agreement with Geohominid's review on the performance which is very fine, on all levels, and particularly so when one considers that this is a live performance with exceptional ensemble work. * Sonics (stereo): One can tell in the first 20 seconds that there are ... more
Martinu: The Piano Trios - Kinsky Trio Prague        (10 of 18 found this review helpful)
  February 16, 2010

I particularly enjoy Martinu's music, and was looking forwards to this SACD. Alas, this one is a gross disappointment. There are two major problems. First, the balance between the instruments is completely wrong: the piano is overly dominant, with a weak violin and cello sound. For a chamber music ... more
Der Junge Beethoven - Martin Stadtfeld      (8 of 9 found this review helpful)

This might be a single disc, but it is really two different recordings, in two different halls, at two different times, of two distinct musical forms. Part 1: Early Beethoven Solo works __________________________________ Recorded: August 2009 Dortmund The repertoire here is early Beethoven ... more

Indidly. Just been browsing the iTunes store ... and up popped, by pure chance: [t=6205] which costs A$29.99 (about US$28) as a download in some crappy worse than CD format ... ... whereas I can buy the hybrid SACD set for US$22 + shipping by following the links from here. Download pricing makes no sense. ... more

> record labels have much to gain selling virtual downloads Except that they don't sell. Download album sales are currently about 10% of CD sales.Single track downloads sell well, but the market for download albums has not taken off. Dropping CD/SACD sales to go 'all download' is financial suicide for an existing recording company, at the ... more

I think the small number of available SACDs means that many of us are very much in the hoarding stage :) I certainly try lots of things that I would not try if they were just ordinary CDs. ... more

Shudder. If the marginal cost of production/distribution falls to zero, the supply of rubbish is going to explode to infinity. Pohlmann's view that 'more is more' is, in my view, a very antiquated 1980s view of the world. Back in the early 1980s, the number of CDs available was quite small ... and having a good music collection, largely speaking, ... more
