Haydn: String Quartets Op. 50 Nos. 3, 5 & 6 - Prazak Quartet        (3 of 8 found this review helpful)
  July 28, 2010

Having just been disappointed with the Praga Digitals Kocian Quartet: ... ... as I opened the wrapper on this Praga Digitals recording ... this time not the Kocian Quartet ... but now the Prazak Quartet ... I must admit I was rather nervous about what was to unfold. But - nothing to worry about ... more
Smetana, Sibelius: String Quartets - Kocian Quartet        (4 of 8 found this review helpful)
  July 28, 2010

I am comparing the Kocian Quartet's performance of the Smetana to the Julliard Quartet's recording (LP). The Kocian do not, unfortunately, come off well from the comparison. Their playing is comparatively rough, their tone strident, the intonation sometimes slippery and sometimes woeful (such as the ... more

Short version: One of the best gems in the SACD classical repertoire. _____________ Schumann: cello concerto (recorded 1962) Lalo: cello concerto (recorded 1962) Saint-Saens: cello concerto (recorded 1964) Long version: ____________ I think this is the finest rendition of the Schumann I have ... more
What about this, Mr. Paganini? - Saschko Gawriloff      (2 of 4 found this review helpful)
  April 27, 2010

As already noted, the central premise of this disc is that the same Sarabande from Bach's Partita in D minor is performed on 7 different violins, including an Amati, a Gaudagnini, two different Guarneris, a Strad and a Vuillaume. An exciting and fun project (even if it has been done before). Would ... more
Ravel: Retrospection - Dejan Lazic        (4 of 8 found this review helpful)
  April 3, 2010

Lazic's Ravel is, at times, most agreeable. At other times, it can sound like a cross between late Beethoven and Tchaikovsky ... I find it often lacking in colour or mystery or dynamics (volume). If anything, I find his Ravel too clear, too distinct, too etude-ish, too de-constructed, and lacking ... more

More SHM-SACDs in October.

The classical choices ... [t=1248] [t=3906] ... are a bit peculiar, insofar as: a) both are commonly available as SACDs (unlike the earlier SHM issues which had sold out as SACDs) b) can be bought as SACDs for about US$10 c) they don't seem to be that highly regarded as performances. To the point: Would I buy an SHM version for $50 if I can ... more

I too noticed the same edginess and fatiguing sonics in the BIS Handel ... as per my comment at: http://www.sa-cd.net/showthread/34236/ ... long before the issue of BIS recording resolution got raised. To me, the sound of this recording is 'distorted' and harsh ... very digital. I agree with the reviews on sa-cd.net that the performance is fine ... more
