Well, time to lay a few ghosts to rest. There are no noises off to distract during these performances. After all the nonsense early on in this thread it was with a sense of trepidation that we settled down to spin this disc for the first time. The nervous tension that accompanied the performance ... more

Sometimes more is less. The more one searches for words to describe this disc the less adequately they seem able to convey it's sheer dynamic intensity, vitality and sensory shock. "Shock and Awe" about sums it up for this listener. It seems to me that this is a benchmark recording in every ... more

There is something quite magical about DZZ Studio No 5 in Moscow. It's not that it has a particularly spectacular acoustic but instruments sound totally accurate and natural in that environment. Obviously some pretty impressive sound engineering has been deployed over the years to achieve ... more

Michael Tilson Thomas knows instinctively what these composers were about emotionally and drives his way spectacularly to the very heart of their creative expression. The ... more

It is strange. I don't doubt their sincerity in releasing material like this and would love to hear their take on the compelling (to them) reason for this release. Even the idea of the three catchy Saint-Saens Concerti on one disc is not new. The Violin Concerti are a comparative rarity on SACD so' what we really, really want' are good modern ... more
