Eric Vloeimans: Umai      (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

A late review of an early -- and exemplary -- stereo SACD jazz title. Produced around the same time as http://sa-cd.net/showtitle/18 and http://sa-cd.net/showtitle/413 by Chris Weeda at Studio Leroy in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Umai demonstrates the virtues of recording in a well-controlled studio ... more
Miles Davis: Sketches of Spain    (12 of 12 found this review helpful)
  February 21, 2013

Though Miles Davis’ name appears above the title and Miles was the instigator of the project, “Sketches of Spain” is from beginning to end the work of gifted composer/arranger Gil Evans, and is overdue for reevaluation. More than a half-century after it was recorded, it still doesn’t fit neatly into ... more

The string quartet is alive and well-served in Dacapo’s recording of three recent works by Danish composer Anders Koppel. The program includes two quartets performed by the Sjælland String Quartet and a quintet featuring the mezzo-soprano saxophone in G, a newly-designed instrument built by Danish ... more

Taking a calculated risk, the members of B3 Classic Trio approach Bruch’s 8 Pieces and Brahms’ chamber masterpiece with an insistence on hearing the works anew. For open-minded listeners, the rewards of giving B3 a fair and patient audition will justify the effort. To understand the goal of this ... more
Wanderer - Christoph Prégardien, Ensemble Kontraste      (1 of 1 found this review helpful)
  December 27, 2012

Pour a glass of Williams Schnapps and delve into an intriguing performance of 19th and 20th-century Romantic lieder filtered through the critical lens of the Second Vienna School. In 2010, tenor Christoph Prégardien and the Ensemble Kontraste developed a concert program for vocalist and ... more

Adding my voice to the small chorus of pleas: RCA LSC 2465 - Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 with Malcolm Frager, Rene Leibowitz conducting the Paris Conservatoire Orchestra. The only available release is an OOP Classic Records LP reissue. As AP has issued http://sa-cd.net/showtitle/6107, perhaps there is reason to hope that they might ... more

You'd have to audition both versions in your own audio system to decide. I appreciate the excellent MoFi mono SACD (http://sa-cd.net/showtitle/8077) because it's a straight tape-to-DSD transfer from the only master mix that was created at the time the recording was made. Recent stereo CDs and SACDs are digital transfers sourced and remixed from the ... more

Just string trio, no organ. Dmitry Sitkovetsky arrangment. Played on a set of Jacobus Stainer instruments donated to Musikkollegium Winterthur in 1951, restored for this project. ... more

These are the NEOS titles in my collection: http://sa-cd.net/showtitle/5329 http://sa-cd.net/showtitle/5669 http://sa-cd.net/showtitle/7259 http://sa-cd.net/showtitle/4884 NEOS operates in conjunction with DRS, the Swiss national radio. I recommend all four titles, and share Polly Nomial's views on the Ospald and Kurtag recordings. I wrote a ... more
A lot to thank the Dutch for!
March 23, 2013
I'm thankful for contemporary Dutch composers, including (the late) Tristan Keuris and (the living) Willem Jeths. Although the Northwest Classics label apparently hasn't released a new SACD since 2009, Willem Jeths' SACDs from 2002 and 2007 are still available. I highly recommend the chamber music recording, Bella Figura. ... more
