Vaughan Williams: A Sea Symphony - Hickox      (8 of 9 found this review helpful)
  May 17, 2013

Vaughan Williams "A Sea Symphony" is one of the greatest and most inspiring works of the 20th century, with excepts from Walt Whitman's masterpiece, "Leaves of Grass". No other work better captures the majesty and beauty of the Sea. Here we have, if I'm not mistaken, the first live recording ever ... more

This is a re-release. I purchased this multi-channel SACD on Amazon well over a year ago. The original release date of this recording was 2008. I was so disappointed with this recording, I have since sold it. It's interesting that now Amazon shows a new release date of June 11, 2013, more than 1 1/2 ... more

This performance has incredible energy, PASSION and excitement yet is restrained and exceedingly ethereal in the slow movements. There is incredible playing by Stefano Montanari on his baroque violin and he never gets ugly. His intonation is beautiful. The recording is incredibly detailed with ... more

Mini review just to warn you. I bought this Stereo only SACD in hopes that it would be a block buster recording like several other Vox/Turnabout recordings, for instance the Ravel Skrowaczewski/Minnesota Recordings and many RCA Living Stereo SACDs. The performances here are good but not great. The ... more

Vive la Vadim, Lauda Litton, Bravissimo Bergen, and Bravo BIS Performance Wow, what a performance! Vadim, Litton and the Bergen give us the most exciting final movement of the Tchaikovsky I‘ve ever heard. Vadim’s emotional bravura and romantic spirit is in full bloom and Litton’s strong and ... more

Dear Mr. Robert von Bahr, I was just wondering, why did you not issue Rachmoninoff's Piano Concertos 1 & 4 with Noriko Ogawa last year in SACD surround sound? Thanks, Jeff ... more

I understand now. I remember hearing the Koto Ensemble's Seasons on the radio, WNIB and WFMT in Chicago, in the 1976. I was a senior in High School. It was great! I still recommend The Four Seasons with Stefano Montanari on violin with the Accademia Bizantina directed by Ottavio Dantone. It's the best original instrument recording out there of ... more

This is a comment of the Review by Beagle December 6, 2005 where he said "If you were wondering which SACD recording of the Four Seasons to buy, or if you are a Rocker and think Music by Dead Guys is vaguely suited to funerals, or if you want to convince a potential mate that you have descriminating taste, or if you want to convince your present ... more

Well, I try to be patriotic as much as I can. But if BIS is going to sell directly to the customer soon, that may mean more profit for BIS which means more SACDs in the future which would benefit me. So this may be a case were I will buy directly from BIS to help the cause of classical music on SACD. Jeff ... more
