Walton: The Symphonies - Owain Arwel Hughes      (8 of 15 found this review helpful)

First I have to say that William Walton is not in my first "top-ten" prefered composer but I'm mind-opened and curious of all music (in the area "classical") The English is not my native language, I'll be brief. About the recording quality this is the best choice for the two symphonies, especially ... more
Mahler: Symphony No. 1 - Jan Willem de Vriend        (2 of 3 found this review helpful)

Recorded in a cavern ? The sounds are melted in an acoustic too much harsh and reverberant. The orchester seems too far (The percussions and brass seem closer than violins and violas !). The soundstage is narrow (too far). The bass are boomy. The interpretation of De Vriend don't please me (what a ... more
Dvorak: Symphony No. 9 - Jansons      (4 of 7 found this review helpful)

A very good and dynamic performance of this symphony but I have to say that I have 16 SACD "RCO Live" and this one is the worst for its recording quality ! The orchester seems too far, in a "railways station" global acoustic. Compared to some of the most recent RCO I have (for example the 8th with ... more

Strauss: Tone Poems - Albrecht        (3 of 7 found this review helpful)

English is not my native langage so I'll not make a review of this SACD but it deserves more than previous revievers ranks for my taste (however 11/13 recommend it), and it is not quite fair for this SACD.

I have these two first volumes of the serie in CD stereo (MDG 340 1182-2 & MDG 340 1298-2). But for sure, I'm ready to buy them in SACD if it's an original multichannel record ! MDG has released a DVD-A (Mozart/Zacharias) with piano concerto n° 25 & symphony "Prague" (MDG 940 0967-5). This was a multichannel record of may 1999. This concerto has ... more
