Mahler: Symphony No. 4 - Reiner    (12 of 13 found this review helpful)
  August 25, 2005

This is in my opinion one of the VERY BEST Living Stereos so far! And we have already had quite a few good ones. I find both the interpretation by Reiner, the playing by the CSO and the recording by Lewis Layton, absolutely outstanding! Reiner lets us hear exactly what Mahler wrote no more, no ... more
David Chesky: Violin, Flute Concertos - Area 31      (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

While basically agreeing with "raffel's" review I'm not quite as enthusiastic about this disc as he obviously is.And I see no reason to downgrade other discs. It is quite interesting music yes. And very well ,albeit a bit closely recorded, with solo instruments violin and flute, very close ... more
Brahms: Symphony No. 3, Serenade No. 2 - Haitink        (5 of 5 found this review helpful)

This SACD from LSO Live ,as "nickc",rightly pointed out in his review, is a bit of a mixed bag. The Serenade is better recorded than the Symphony, different balance engineers. But on the other hand I find the Serenade a rather boring exercise piece that I won't listen to very often. The third ... more
Dvorak: Symphony No. 6 - Sir Colin Davis        (4 of 4 found this review helpful)
  April 30, 2005

Yet another absolute winner from LSO Live! Dvorak's underrated sixth Symphony that has for too long stood in the shadow of the more famous 8th and 9th Symphonies,is played with real fire and gusto by the LSO under Colin Davis and emerges as a work of real stature IMO.It is really great to hear what ... more
Arvo Pärt: Berliner Messe - Edison      (9 of 10 found this review helpful)
  April 28, 2005

What a wonderful disc this is. Some of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt's greatest choral works are admirably performed by the Elora Festival Singers under the direction of Noel Edison. The main work "Berliner Messe" for choir and strings is very atmospheric, even spellbinding both in its apparent ... more

BIS thread
August 22, 2008
Since I am one of those who obviously strayed from the accepted norms here, let me bring this thread back to SACD, by adding my two cents to the "long play" low res SACDs that BIS has released. For me personally they hold no interest whatsoever, unless they have been recorded either higher than 16/44, or are sourced from analogue originals. I ... more

As a photographer I travel for sometimes six months or more every year. So far I have had to be content with ripped RBCDs when travelling. And it has always been a real relief when I come home again and can finally listen to the hi rez layer of the SACDs I´ve bought abroad. But now I have recently downloaded some hi rez testfiles from 2l that ... more

I saw her live performing Schostaowich´s first violin concerto in Prague two years ago. I photographed her and spoke to her about SACD . She said that she was recording for Orfeo at that time but would talk with her agent about my suggestions. Good to hear that she has signed on with Pentatone ... more
Some recent listening
June 29, 2008
Hello there everybody , I just have to add some of my views on a couple of recent releases. Let me first of all comment on the IMHO , possibly very best and MOST REALISTIC RECORDING so far released on SACD! The Sony BMG Strauss Alpine symphony is exactly the kind of recording I have been pushing for in many of my earlier posts! Yeah, this is ... more
More mikes- more noise?
July 25, 2007
Having kept my big mouth shut for over six months while abroad and away from my SACDs,being back home again and listening to SACD on a daily basis, I feel it is time for me to add my two cents to some recent threads here. There have been some comments about noise on two recordings from BIS and Channel Classics, Tchaikovsky´s first and ... more
