Mahler: Symphony No. 4 - Haitink        (13 of 13 found this review helpful)

On 7 November 2006 Bernard Haitink led the Royal Concertgeboux Orchestra in a jubilee concert commemorating his 50th anniversary of his first appearance with the orchestra. This recording of the Mahler Fourth Symphony is from that concert. I wish they'd have these jubilee concerts more often! I've ... more
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 5, The Seasons - Eschenbach      (6 of 8 found this review helpful)

Well, in distinct contrast to two of the posted reviews, I really liked this recording, in most every way. One really needs another T5 in the way one needs another M6 recording. Thus, I was just not very interested in this recording, and the reviews here were not exactly upbeat. For sa-cd, I've been ... more

This new RCO Live release is a very good one. I’ve come to be very impressed with the sound of the Concertgeboux Orchestra in live concert as captured by the Polyhymnia recording team. The recording here of the Shostakovich Seventh Symphony in this year of Shostakovich is really like so many ... more
Schmitt: Symphonies - New Dutch Academy/Murphy        (5 of 5 found this review helpful)
  June 17, 2006

Another wonderful disc from Pentatone!!!!! Joseph Schmitt was also known as "the Dutch Haydn" as many of his compositions were credited to the "real" Haydn. You can read much more about Joseph Schmitt in the very good notes by Simon Murphy. As this is a world premier recording, there's really ... more
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 7 - Gergiev      (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

I’ve had this disc since shortly after release in 2003, first on rbcd, then on sacd after I got my sacd player. I remember there was quite a bit of press coverage upon release; Valery Gergiev even had a short interview on NPR. I’ve listened a few times, always enjoying the music, but never felt like ... more

Perfect Sound for the Time Being: Behind the Compact Disc’s Sonic Ascent

My post was not really about the preamp issue, as you contend it to be. The number of parts in a sacd player is irrelevant. The thing that is relevant is what the parts and circuits do. There is nothing simple about a turntable/tonearm/cartridge/phono preamp playback system. Sonic superiority and coloration, in relation to what? What is the ... more

Huh! The music that comes out of the player has been highly influence by the design and circuits employed in the output stage, and I/V converter if needed to turn a current output to a voltage output, a differential amp to combine the + and -signals and give a small amount of gain, and a current amp or buffer. There are a lot of different ways to ... more

Okay, if you want to argue XRCD, this is the wrong forum for that. This is the sacd forum. XRCD is not sacd. ... more

JVC's XRCD process and discs have been around for a long time. Why don't you go and do some research about it instead of posting questions about it on the sacd forum? Or, you could post about it on a more appropriate forum, like AA digital forum, as you might get some actual information there to your "why" questions. ... more
