Stéphane Denève conducts Debussy      (10 of 27 found this review helpful)
  July 16, 2012

I received this disc (set) last week with a feeling of great anticipation, after reading many great reviews. My let down was immediate. I will use the "fish bowl" analogy. Just as a fish bowl distorts light in such a way that the fish inside it cannot be perceived as "free swimming" but are rather ... more
Schumann: Carnaval, Chopin - Slávka Pechocová        (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

A man of many hats (poet, philosopher, inventor, teacher, music critic, song composer, piano virtuoso, piano composer, conductor, orchestral composer…) Robert Schumann, in his role as music critic, writing in his music journal, the “Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik”, in an article published in May 1831, ... more
Beethoven, Schumann: Piano Concertos - Van Cliburn, Fritz Reiner      (10 of 12 found this review helpful)
  August 4, 2007

I have been deeply impressed with everything that I have heard in the re-mastered Living Stereo SACD series and this recording featuring Van Cliburn performing the Schumann Piano Concerto as well as the Beethoven Emperor Concerto just continues in this tradition of excellence. There is something ... more
Beethoven & Mendelssohn: Violin Concertos - Heifetz/Munch      (5 of 7 found this review helpful)
  August 4, 2007

I had not heard a Heifetz recording in over ten years. I don't remember being too impressed with his fiddle playing the first time I investigated his recordings and I must say that I was not impressed this time either. Heifetz has an awful tendency to rush through everything. He does not seem to ... more
Beethoven: Symphony No. 9 - Haitink        (6 of 32 found this review helpful)
  December 22, 2006

DISAPPOINTING...I expected so much better than this from this conductor. This music deserves so much more. Haitink is merely sleepwalking here. The performance is forgettable and undistinguished in a very crowded field. I would avoid this one. It's underpowered, uninspired and uninspiring. Where's ... more

I have observed the same thing regarding the sampling rate. I think the conversion is easier going from 88.1 kHz PCM to DSD. Less steps...less decimation...a truer sounding transfer. ... more
RCA Living Stereo Reissues on Hybrid SACD
May 13, 2013
Some of them are available currently (or were available) but at least five of these have never been released on SACD before and I am intrigued at the possibility of finer remasterings of those titles that have already been released. ... more
RCA Living Stereo Reissues on Hybrid SACD
May 13, 2013
I was very surprised by this announcement. It seemed too good to be true, but I am delighted to find that Analogue Productions are indeed turning their attention to the Living Stereo catalog. I think audiophiles (and music lovers) will benefit greatly from this turn of events. ... more
Discussion: Ravel: Orchestral works - Martinon
February 13, 2013
It's disappointing to hear that this set is not hybrid. Every other release in the series (EMI-Japan, EMI-UK) that I have got my hands on has been hybrid, but I guess its the SACD remastering that's most important and I have been deeply pleased with everything in this series that I have heard so far. I recentyly found the redbook version of the ... more
Discussion: Schumann: The Four Symphonies - Sawallisch
February 8, 2013
I received this set yesterday and I am very, very pleased with it. The recording sounds dramatically cleaner and more present than the previous CD incarnation. I used to wonder if I was missing something, because I had never really liked these recordings in the previous redbook release (despite the near unanimous raves). The recorded acoustic ... more
