Orient - Occident - Hesperion XXI/Savall      (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
  January 24, 2008

This is a crowning achievement in the domain of world music from Savall and Alia Vox team following initial musical and cultural exploration of Judeo/Arab influences on the Christian world of middle ages. What started discreetly in Isabela and is explored much further in magnificent double RBCD ... more
Francisco Javier: The Route to the Orient - Savall      (8 of 8 found this review helpful)
  January 21, 2008

Jordi Savall has got his winning formula well established by now. What he calls in his introduction as CD/Books are inspired collections of historical essays and musical excerpts, this time following life and travels of Francisco Xavier, Jesuit priest spreading Christianity to Far East. After ... more
Monteverdi: Vespers, Magnificat - Robert King        (3 of 4 found this review helpful)

Few years ago a reasonably successful British composer told me how sick he was of Monteverdi being treated and worshipped in this country as a 'holy cow'. This got me thinking, but it also made me revisited Monteverdi's music I usually take for granted. Was it the music or some mediocre performances ... more
Monteverdi: Vespro della Beata Vergine - Savall      (5 of 6 found this review helpful)

Jordi Savall is set to re-release his pre Alia Vox catalogue in the Heritage series. If it is to judge by this first outing we're in for a treat and it looks like Savall, as much being European's greatest early music authority also knows where to stop in fiddling with old recordings and not to ... more
Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde - Shui      (1 of 1 found this review helpful)
  January 16, 2008

This is unfortunately nothing more than a curiosity - for the same reason we don't have any Peking opera translated into English (or German), 'Das Lied' should have been left as it is language-wise. Shame for missed opportunity from BIS to give us such a high quality audio recording married with ... more

Quite the opposite - for me that is the attraction of the set. Even if my Spanish is very limited, the readings are so well done and fit the musical part perfectly! My Spanish friend told me that the actor who is reading the excerpts is the Spanish equivalent of Lawrence Olivier, hardly surprising in such a high level of production. And even if you ... more

All 3 books are far more than just CDs or SACDs. It's amazing what one can learn from just reading them - my interest in Spanish history (and early music) is more than satisfied. And that applies to complete Alia Vox catalogue. I even got my copy of Don Quixote signed by the man himself when I met him last spring in London. I was full of praise for ... more
Discussion: Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 - Manze

I just got Harmonia Mundi's sampler for new releases with some 6 minutes of the first movement, RBCD only, of course. Its fast and crisp, and it does sound if they are using period instruments - or at least Manze made orchestra sounding rather 'periodish'. I've heard Gardiner conducting Beethoven's 7th with London Symphony Orchestra and he managed ... more

From what I gathered from the book variations for Indian and Japanese instruments are improvisations on O Gloriosa Domina hymn. Everything else is of course composed and performed as is. Thinking of it, I seriously doubt that there are any music for those eastern instruments written down in any shape of form of western music from the period. That ... more

Well, life would be easy, wouldn’t it my dear Peter if we could have just one favourite performance of our cherished music. How can I choose between Gardiner through whom I discovered Vespro many years ago, how can I ignore Alessandrini whom I’ve heard live and who swiped me off my feet with his energy, or not bow to Savall who still sounds 20 ... more
