Mendelssohn: Symphony No. 2 - Litton      (7 of 8 found this review helpful)
  June 19, 2009

ADHD Summary: A markedly different approach to solving the Mendelssohn #2 problem; both less and more satisfactory than the old DoubleMint Gum, this recording is really two, two, two performances in one. The Sinfonia part lacks drama, and the choral 2/3rds makes up for it. In terms of enjoyable ... more
Mahler: Symphony No. 1 (trans. piano) - Prague Piano Duo        (4 of 4 found this review helpful)
  April 29, 2009

ADHD Summary: This disc is something of a mixed bag. If you are a fan of Liszt's transcriptions of the works of everyone else, you will probably enjoy this disc, but be disappointed if you were expecting Liszt's level of quality. If you are a pianist in search of fringe material, you may enjoy it, ... more
Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 5 - Paavo Järvi        (7 of 7 found this review helpful)
  March 13, 2009

ADHD Summary: Another worthy release in this series. As with the 4&7 and 3&8 discs, more is revealed in the lesser known symphonies. The sound is close and well defined. Good Fifth, but buy it for the standard setting First. TOC: - the performances - the sound The performances: Sym #5: I ... more
Tarik O'Regan: Threshold of Night      (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
  November 30, 2008

ADHD Summary: This is early 21st century choral music, and it is a grab bag of moderately challenging "pseud-a-cappella" pieces by a young composer. It is an album that is both more and less of what it promises to be. The recording is excellent, and in the spirit of double-talk, I endorse it ... more
Haydn: String Quartets Op. 20 - Pellegrini Quartett      (6 of 6 found this review helpful)
  August 13, 2008

ADHD Summary: The king is dead -- long live the new king of recordings. This is my current "best recording I have heard of anything," replacing the Martinu Quartets on Praga that I reviewed in November of 2006. It is also a wonderfully interesting performance of the Op 20 set, and should be added ... more

And it is unfortunate that many fans of legit music feel this way. Among my friends who are /not/ fans of legit music, Ma is the one active performer that each can name. I suspect the collective reaction among legit music fans is related to a growing awareness of the options. I have nine complete sets of the Bach Suites. It certainly is not true ... more

I know. I know. I know. I guess I consider myself an audiophile and an engineer. I want an enjoyable musical experience in the home, and if it takes a few more transistors in circuit to do the job, so be it. There is an option that does not involve the recording or playback equipment: find the power switch on the air handler, and turn it off. ... more

I apologize for calling your effort incompetence, particularly since you have stated that it was a conscious choice. I have learned something about both your recording and my own preferences. I think I qualify as a person who perhaps does not want to "reproduce the dynamic range of a full symphony" in my listening room. For me, this is not the ... more

Whether the digital representation of the signal is PCM or DSD, it will have its least distortion when the recording level is closest to maximum, which I shall refer to as 0dB. Ideally, one would record so that the loudest music gets as close to 0dB as it can be without exceeding it. I don't think the recording level is subjective at all: most ... more
