Haydn: String Quartets Op. 20 - Pellegrini Quartett      (6 of 6 found this review helpful)
  August 13, 2008

ADHD Summary: The king is dead -- long live the new king of recordings. This is my current "best recording I have heard of anything," replacing the Martinu Quartets on Praga that I reviewed in November of 2006. It is also a wonderfully interesting performance of the Op 20 set, and should be added ... more
Bach: The Six Sonatas & Partitas for Violin Solo - Lara St. John    (9 of 9 found this review helpful)
  July 3, 2008

ADHD Summary: This album is the most enjoyable one I have of these Bach Warhorses, but I hope St. John's performance is neither your first nor your only exposure to the music. The recording avoids all the problems I usually associate with solo instrumental recordings. A winner, even with the ... more
Beethoven: Piano Sonatas Vol. 1 - Hewitt      (6 of 6 found this review helpful)
  November 5, 2007

ADHD Summary: This disc is truly showcase quality in terms of sound. The music is familiar, but the performances are unusual and/or memorable. You really should read the liner notes before listening at all to the music. The piano is a Fazioli, which has a sound for which the word /unique/ is a ... more
Richard Strauss: Sinfonia Domestica - Reiner    (10 of 11 found this review helpful)
  August 26, 2007

ADHD Summary: The Amazon review(er) said: "My reviews of the recordings of Fritz Reiner are starting to become monotonous; excellent sound and wonderful interpretation!" It helps to actually listen to the disc, I suppose. This is not Strauss's best music. The music is well played, enjoyable, but ... more
Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde - Reiner    (16 of 16 found this review helpful)
  August 24, 2007

ADHD Summary: Does the world need another recording of Das Lied? Well, it does need this one, and so do you. Excellent performance; very good recording. This is only the second SACD to which I shall give a "must buy," even though it is not flawless. Back story: Last weekend, Glenda went ... more

And it is unfortunate that many fans of legit music feel this way. Among my friends who are /not/ fans of legit music, Ma is the one active performer that each can name. I suspect the collective reaction among legit music fans is related to a growing awareness of the options. I have nine complete sets of the Bach Suites. It certainly is not true ... more

I know. I know. I know. I guess I consider myself an audiophile and an engineer. I want an enjoyable musical experience in the home, and if it takes a few more transistors in circuit to do the job, so be it. There is an option that does not involve the recording or playback equipment: find the power switch on the air handler, and turn it off. ... more

I apologize for calling your effort incompetence, particularly since you have stated that it was a conscious choice. I have learned something about both your recording and my own preferences. I think I qualify as a person who perhaps does not want to "reproduce the dynamic range of a full symphony" in my listening room. For me, this is not the ... more

Whether the digital representation of the signal is PCM or DSD, it will have its least distortion when the recording level is closest to maximum, which I shall refer to as 0dB. Ideally, one would record so that the loudest music gets as close to 0dB as it can be without exceeding it. I don't think the recording level is subjective at all: most ... more
