This one was released without Davis's consent - it's compiled from off-cuts from his collaborations with Gil Evans. Musically, it's a real mixed bag with no real winners, and some are downright irritating enough to skip past without a second thought.

Songwise, there is very little reason to complain, and the playing is also excellent. Not all the songs are classics, but enough of them here are strong enough to make this a 4-star album, easily.

On first listen--Wow! This is what a 1958-era stereo recording should sound like on SACD! The horns are crisp and clear, the bass has huge resonance and the drums are panned in stereo! This is quite an odd LP, in a musical sense. The pieces have little or nothing to do with traditional Spanish music, save for "Solea". A fine sounding SACD in all respects, though I have to disagree with the previous review on the MC mix, which is outstanding because it places the listener within the soundstage, instead of just from the audience perspective -- as a result, you can hear many more nuances in the music than what you ... more |

| Here is the weird thing--a poster on Steve Hoffman's SH Forum Music Corner board just scarfed the SACD of "Rocks" from a chain store in California--the post even has photos of him holding the single layer stereo disc, which he says sounds fantastic.
