Bo Linde: Orchestral Works Vol. 2 - Sundkvist    (7 of 7 found this review helpful)
  February 14, 2008

For those of you who bought the first instalment in this series of four SACD's this one will come as a bit of a surprise I think. This is Bo Linde in a lighter mood, but no less masterly. Let me first say that I have heard three of the four pieces several times before but not any of the previous ... more
Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 11 & 12 - Janina Fialkowska      (11 of 11 found this review helpful)

My initial reaction was a big question mark. Why play these pieces in their arrangements for piano and string quintet. A rather pointless excercise, I thought. I couldn´t be more wrong! This is surely the disc that I have had most pleasure from during the last six months, it is a delight from ... more
Brahms: Symphony No. 1, Haydn Variations - Janowski        (15 of 16 found this review helpful)

Symphony no 1 timings: Janowski, 15.13, 8.31, 4.30, 16.13. Bychkov, 17.19, 8.46, 5.45, 18.21 (repeats are the same) As you can see fom the above this is a swift performance and right from the outset there is a sense of haste. The orchestral sound is great, big and beefy with very deep and forward ... more

If you have heard Debussy´s La Mer played by the great orchestras of the world, why would anyone want to hear it played by the Singapore Symphony? I had serious doubts about this SACD, but it took only a few minutes and I was completely won over. This is a marvellous disc and even though I prefer ... more

It is a very good idea to start this SACD with the theme by Tallis that Vaughan Williams based his fantasy on. It´s only a minute long but very beautiful indeed. Let me first say that I didn´t care much for Spano´s performance of the Sea Symphony. I found it lacking in breadth and vastness. Also ... more

So what do we expect of a new Rite? Well, it is an SACD so please keep criticism to a minimum. Remember Sibelius with Neeme Järvi? Rubbish performances issued on SACD. I can, of course, give you numerous examples of recorded performances receiving high accolades because of being SACD's only. This new Rite is expertly played, as can be expected ... more

I know that John mentioned this in his review, but it should be noted that this is not the complete Firebird. Rather it is the 20 minute short 1919 suite. Jansons could at least have chosen the 1945 version which is almost twice as long. Now I shall listen to this and the Berlioz Requiem on Pentatone. ... more
