Gandolfi: The Garden of Cosmic Speculation - Spano      (6 of 6 found this review helpful)

It is frequently standard operating procedure that when you attend a symphony concert in the San Francisco Bay Area a thoroughly modern work is sandwiched in between the compositions that you paid mucho bucks to hear. And while most often, the works are delightful you wonder out loud (speaking with ... more
Verdi: Requiem - Harnoncourt      (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
  February 6, 2008

Two weeks ago I attended a splendid performance of Verdi’s Requiem, replete with beautifully burnished brass in the galleries. (It’s amazing how much more I can enjoy a live performance when I take off my audiophile cap/blinders). I “prepped” for the performance (as I try to do as much as ... more

“July 6th The Great Jazz Trio” (Hank Jones-piano, John Patittucci-bass, and Omar Hakim-drums) was recorded live at the Birdland New York this last July 6, 2007. I have had it for a few weeks now and was originally going to post my comments almost immediately after hearing it a couple of times. (See ... more

It was 1:00 am and after listening to Berlioz’ Requiem (Maazel on Decca vinyl) at rather loud levels, my better judgment told me to tone it down a bit, lest I start getting family protests. I couldn’t locate the Brandenburg Concertos I wanted to listen to, but I saw this Biber work a few SACDs down ... more

I purchased my copy for $26 (including shipping) from an “affiliate” of Amazon.com. That is, I looked up the disc at Amazon.com, found it to be too expensive ($54) and happen to see a link called “new and used”. I clicked there and found it available from Japan for $26. My copy was new and the service from Japan was great. You also might try the ... more

Thank you for your compliment. I, too, recommend the Munch (The RCA SACD *not* the XRCD). I also enjoy Louis Fremaux with the City of Birmingham orchestra on Klavier Records. Also, see the thread at: http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/hirez/messages/23/237045.html ... more
Discussion: SACD Surround Sound Reference Disc

Yes, I too have heard good things about the Pentatone disc. The important thing is that music lovers with SACD multi-channel systems get the most out of them by a least starting fresh with a SACD (not HT) multi-channel reference disc with calibration tones. Robert C. Lang ... more
