Another winner from the Exton-Macal-CPO team.

The real hero of this recording is the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, giving an all-out performance of this complex score.

This is a classic performance of the Brahms Piano Concerto nr. 1. Sir Clifford Curzon was at the top of his considerable powers when he did this recording, and both Orchestra and conductor George Szell partner him ably.

Zinman´s Mahler cycle goes from strength to strength. I would consider this recording of the fourth symphony the most succesfull of the cycle yet, only marred by the soprano soloist on the 4th movement, who has a far too mature voice for a part that needs absolute purity and steadiness of tone.

A very succesful recording of a great and complex work. Orchestra and chorus are first rate, the soloist is rather breathy and wobbly, although sings her part with fine sense of the poetry.

| I read in the Japanese shop HMV that they will be releasing a batch of SHM-CD records. Thay are at full price (Yen 2.800 each).
Anyone knows what type of prodct is this ? The releases are reprocessed existing ones, mainly of the Universal catalogue.- ... more |

| For me it is very clear: technology at the service of art.
Many in this Forum expect only spectacular sonics from SACD... not me, I will prefer a great performance any day. In fact, not many "new" SACD´s are artistically up to speed, and that is why we go to the great artists of the past. And Furtwaengler is certainly one of them... , we do not ... more |
