Shostakovich: Symphony No. 13 - Wigglesworth      (7 of 7 found this review helpful)
  July 16, 2007

The series of Wigglesworth/Shostakovich recordings spans backwards into the pre-SA-CD era, with very good recordings on RBCD of symphonies 5,6,7,10 and an absolutely stunning, intense recording of symphony 14 that remains one of my two favored recordings of that piece (along with Rostropovich's ... more
Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde - Arming      (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

There are a number of things I enjoy about this disc. I think the orchestra plays well, and the multichannel engineering captures this live concert honestly. Though there isn't as good a sense of a listening space as I've heard on other recordings, the imaging of the orchestra itself is quite good, ... more
Shostakovich: Complete String Quartets Vol. 1 - Mandelring Quartett      (10 of 10 found this review helpful)

Well, at least for now, this is my favorite SA-CD, for a number of reasons. Of the three quartets presented here, only #2 was previously available on SA-CD, with the Rosalyra Quartet on Artegra (coupled with #8). Best I can tell, the Artegra recording was the only previous recording of any of the ... more
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 11 - Caetani      (7 of 7 found this review helpful)

I greatly enjoyed this. I haven't heard the Pletnev, yet, which Polly Nomial has reviewed for the site. The Rostropovich, Lazarev, and Kitajenko readings are all in my player, and if forced to do so, I'd probably pick Kitajenko because of the sound and the orchestra. The sound on Caetani's is close ... more
Shostakovich: Symphony No. 8 - Caetani      (6 of 6 found this review helpful)

I greatly enjoyed the versions of the 5th and 6th symphonies produced by these forces, great sound, with a gritty orchestra occasionally pushed to (and once in a while, over) its limits. This 8th is unusual, though not without its merits. The orchestra again gives a great effort. The sound is a ... more

The Great 20th Century Violin Concertos

Agreed about Berg! I'd welcome a Walton violin concerto on Bis, though there is one out on Philips (coupled with Sibelius) that I like. Being me, I'd list the Shostakovich 1st (several recordings) and 2nd (none yet on SA-CD). Both Prokofiev violin concerti are out on SA-CD (Fischer #1, Heifetz #2). -Rob ... more
Discussion: Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 - Järvi
June 2, 2008
Just got this a few days ago, and on first listening, enjoyed it very much. Sonics seemed excellent, very natural. I'll give it more listens before I review it from the performance perspective. I wanted to post now, though, to pass on that the conductor's interview in the liner notes indicates that the Bruckner symphony cycle is being recorded ... more
Digital transfer of sacd (ilink or DenonLink) versus analogue (6 x RCA/phono)?
May 15, 2008
Necessary? Just desirable :-). The PS3 plays BluRay (the main reason I got it, though it's a good SA-CD player too), the Oppo plays DVD-Audio and sends DSD to my receiver... ...I didn't even mention my Sony carousel SA-CD player (which I have hooked up using RCAx6, and in which I store most of my discs)! So, yes, I've got 3 SA-CD players hooked up ... more
Digital transfer of sacd (ilink or DenonLink) versus analogue (6 x RCA/phono)?
May 14, 2008
Hi -- The signal ends up as analog when it gets to the speaker outputs from the amplifier. So, I hope I'm not rephrasing your question too much by this, but the question may be _where_ in the chain does the signal change to analog. I've got two rooms set up for SACD multichannel. The answers are different for me in these two rooms. I've got a ... more
SACD / DSD via HDMI-- what's the skinny?

Hey, FunkyMonkey -- You probably know how to do this already, and you may not _want_ to do it, but I've set up my PS3 to send out ~88kHz SA-CD multichannel so that my Onkyo can work its Audyssey magic. In my listening room/speaker set-up this sounds much better than the unprocessed 176kHz signal. -Rob ... more
