Mahler: Symphony No. 3 - Bernstein      (10 of 12 found this review helpful)

I purchased three of the new Sony/Japan releases of Bernstein's first Mahler cycle from HMV.jp: the third, fourth, and seventh symphonies. My comments apply generally to all three of these performances, but are being posted in this one review location. From my personal standpoint, there is no sense ... more

My goodness, what am I to do when I want to listen to a great M2 in SACD? I have fine stereo ones from Slatkin, Ozawa, and Litton. And for multi-channel, I can choose from great ones by Fischer, MTT, Kobayashi and now Zinman. Let me start at the end (since it just finished). This is an absolutely ... more

I listened to this in multichannel SACD and found it to be an unbelievable experience. In fact, when I listen to this symphony, I want to come away from it feeling like I had a memorable experience. This is one of the few versions that pretty well satisfies me (along with the Barenboim/Chicago one). ... more

In short, this is a spectacular M4 from Macal/Czech PO on Exton!! I ordered the M4 Macal/Czech PO SACD from HMV.JP. I have a fairly good track record with Mahler SACD releases on the Exton label, but of course, most of them feature the great Czech PO. This one, however, strikes me as being quite an ... more

This is another winner from MTT and the SFSO. I would certainly put this in my first tier of favorite M9’s, but would not place it above the recent Chailly/RCOA one, which is perhaps my favorite of the 30+ in my collection. Actually, comparisons of the two are almost required, since both are very ... more

Thanks. Most of these newer Exton recordings sound fantastic in the "cheap" version that I buy. My equipment does not merit anything else (Denon 3808 Receiver, Oppo-980, NHT Classic 3's, etc.). Scott ... more

Does anyone know what the "Direct Cut" version of this CD represents? I can't imagine any scenario where I would pay $400 for a CD, but I am interested in WHY this version is priced as such. Of course that is the problem with these Exton-Octavia CD's: it is hard to get information on them until someone makes a purchase. FWIW, I am extremely ... more

To my ears, it is the reverberation that has been truncated. If you can wait until after the weekend, I will certainly be listening to these again to confirm. I don't remember ANY type of truncation on my Bernstein Century box set, so this caught me by surprise. As for the question on the rear channels, they are indeed used very sparingly for ... more

I'm not sure if it can be considered a full review, but I posted a general review of three of the Sony/Japan SACD releases of Bernstein's first Mahler cycle. It consists of comments pertaining to all three of the releases, not just the M3. Scott ... more

No doubt others may not share my enthusiasm of the other listed M2's in my review. One reason that I listed them all is so that someone can better see my preferences. BTW, I revisited the first movement a couple of weeks ago and am now questioning the multi-channel sound quality. After ensuring that my 2 year old son's button-pushing, ... more
