Joe Pass: Virtuoso      (4 of 5 found this review helpful)

I remember fondly buying every CD remotely of interest in the early days. I still don't know how HMV in Oxford Street came to have a Japanese version of Virtuoso but I bought it on the spot - even though there was only a token track listing in English. The music has always impressed but I never ... more

Stereo set up only for me so all comments for 2 channel. I don't know if the 2 channel mix is similar or not to the originally released SACD. Some say yes others say no. Listening in isolation this disc sounds OK. If I were to pinpoint one aspect which I am a little uncomfortable with its the ... more

I have to respectfully disagree with the previous reviews. I had several CD versions, including the MasterSound Gold version, and they just didn't work. The SACD shows why. The acoustic guitars sound so real, as do the electric guitars - now they sound like a real Les Paul through an overdriven amp. ... more

I can't stop listening to this. I sold my CD version a while back because it didn't work for me but this is just brilliant. Everything I look for in recording. Highly detailed yet easy to listen to. Just great to sit and enjoy. Its one of those rare SACDs where you aren't always looking for a wow ... more

I only listen in stereo so, sorry, no talk of spinning guitars and drums here. The general view of this disc is the sheer listenability. The RBCD, especially the first version, could sound ferocious at times. It seems that the high end has been tamed, yet the mids shine through in a way like never ... more

I have written this off as either an ill founded rumour or something that may have been slated once upon a time, like the Steely Dan SACDs. What next Animals? Pigs may fly...... ... more

Its a good point. Why not put them in SACD cases? As long as they are clearly labeled and put in the music section there shouldn't be a problem. Unlike SACD the audio discs are a subset of the overall standard (I hope) so at least they should play in all BD players. ... more

My horizons are now: 1) Make do with buying what titles I don't own. 2) Ensure whatever hardware I have can play my "old" SACDs and DVD-As because I don't want to buy them all over again. If Blu-Ray disc has a good audio standard built in and people are buying players as the new default for watching movies, and there is no danger of confusing the ... more

I don't think it is deviating at all and I understand how frustrating this seems but those $10-$15 BLU-RAY discs are likeley to be selling in gazillions and feeding a lot of shareholders. The overall profits of those BLUE NOTE SACDs will be modest if not laughable to a larger corporation. There is much material I wouldn't pay $5 for but there is ... more
