Easy-sounding, mildly diverting contemporary fusion music is a staple of the contemporary globalised metropolitan music scene. However, memorable high quality compositions in this genre, repaying multiple hearings, are rarer beasts. This release is a triumphal example of the latter. The works are ... more

This innovative piano recital features Beethoven's last piano sonata. The programme concludes with early works by the three seminal figures of what has come to be known as the 'Second Viennese School'. The Webern items are a sequence for violin and piano. For those unfamiliar with these latter ... more

This sumptuously presented hybrid stereo SACD is enthusiatically recommended to listeners of contemporary classical, especially fans of the Kronos quartet. It will appeal to avant garde art aficionados, and with its complex electric guitar and electronics tracks, also to rock music ... more

This is a lovely disc of lyrical short original compositions, performed primarily by the composer-pianist. Mainly in a jazz or jazz/popular idiom, this SACD can be confidently recommended to fans of jazz, popular, folk and new age music. The 'audiophile disc' has received plenty of deserved ... more

This disc comprises eleven original compositions for the unusual combination of cello, trumpet, bassoon and piano/synthesiser. It should appeal to listeners of jazz, New Age, and tonal contemporary classical music. Moreover, the audiophile production qualities are coupled to musical values which are ... more

I agree with THomas about the virtues of Stravinsky's own recording for CBS, and the Muti/ Philadelphia. Muti's performance is my personal favourite. He seems to have studied Stravinsky's own recording in terms of tempi and balance, but has the inestimable advantage of the Philadelphia orchestra. At least the Stravinsky is on SACD. The Muti has the ... more

According to Stormin' Norman Lebrecht, you don't need Blue ray to see Netrebko in 'high definition' : 'Netrebko, last seen in the March issue of Playboy Magazine, has gone off to have a baby with her Uruguayan baritone boyfriend Erwin Schrott, who is being sued for non-appearance at a London recital last week.... Sony-BMG is unravelling by the ... more

The Handel Op6 Concerto Grosso set is one I'll buy even without waiting to read somebody's review. The Telarc SACD is only of half the set, since an earlier plain CD was released. Hence we won't get the complete set on Telarc SACD. At first I thought this was a Channel release, since this band have a Vivaldi concertos set on that label. It'll be ... more

Sorry, the earlier release WASN'T a hybrid, but a single layer. The packaging was very deceptive, not stipulating it was a single layer disc unless it said so only in Japanese. I have plenty of gamelan CDs, but this SACD is by far the best gamelan recording of the lot-- it reproduces that high frequency 'shimmer' of clashing harmonics which you ... more

What's going on here? I already have this, as the cover is identical, with its previous serial number-- XSGL1. That SACD is a hybrid multichannel release, so it isn't like the Sony Bernstein Mahler 1 which was a single layer stereo release but reissued as a hybrid. ... more
