Friedrich Nietzsche: Complete Solo Piano Works - Michael Krücker      (4 of 4 found this review helpful)
  July 9, 2008

Friedrich Nietzsche is mostly remembered for his philosophical writings, but played piano and composed music (mostly for piano) since boyhood. That he was inspired by Wagner and even attempted to assist him, is well konwn, but he withdrew his plans after being disappointed by Wagner's personality ... more
Gregori, Stradella: Concerti Grossi - Capriccio Basel      (2 of 3 found this review helpful)
  May 18, 2008

Considering the beauty of the pieces presented here and the first-class rendition Capriccio Basel delivers it is a shame that outside of the famous Corelli op. 6, very little of the great number of concertoi grossi by Italian composers of the time are available on disc or present in the mind of the ... more
Vince Guaraldi Trio: A Boy Named Charlie Brown    (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
  April 8, 2008

One side effect of the high resolution transfer of this 1964 recording is the audibility of some low frequency noise on the beat during the first and fifth track, like some mic stand resonating from a foot taping in time - switch off your subwoofers in case this disturbs you! That aside, it sounds ... more
Vince Guaraldi Trio: Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus    (1 of 1 found this review helpful)
  April 8, 2008

I was almost tempted to describe this as a classic of easy listening jazz, but making music like this, on a high level of musicianship but still entertaining, is so hard to do, and probably a lost art. Vince Guaraldi was a master at this, one of the most swinging West Coast pianists with a great ... more
Tommy Turrentine    (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
  April 8, 2008

Musically, this is a rare bird from the hard bop era, since it is trumpeter Tommy Turrentine's only session as a leader, recorded when he was a member of Max Roach's band. The line-up here with the Turrentine brothers, Julian Priester, Bobby Boswell, and Max Roach, is the Roach band of the time, ... more

June 10, 2007
I have not heard the recording discussed here, but would like to remark the following concerning Tacet's special surround technique: Placing the two violin sections opposite of each other is not their invention but follows the common performance practice that was completely abandoned only in the 20th century. Most composers intentionally wrote ... more
