Rolling Stones: Beggars Banquet  (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

This has always been my fave Stones album. I've had a copy in almost every format available over the years including the ABKCO SA-CD which I thought was pretty good. Based on this musical performance and previous experience with SHM SA-CDs I decided to spring for a copy on the chance it might be ... more
The Doobie Brothers: The Captain and Me      (2 of 2 found this review helpful)

As I have posted recently I have (had) many versions of this title the most recent being the MoFi sa-cd. I felt that I was missing something in all of these so I ordered this, the WEA version. I was willing to take a chance but didn't really feel there would be a great difference. Boy was I ... more
Dire Straits: Dire Straits  (2 of 2 found this review helpful)

I first heard some of this recording on master dupes while it was being promoted around its release time back in the 70's. At that time I was immediately struck by not just the quality of the performance but also the fantastic sound reproduction. Among other things the quality bottom end ... more

I find this a truly strange one. The musicianship is first rate. Jacintha’s vocals are up to her usually high level of competence and the chosen tune selections are all ones I like. The problem is I can’t just put this on and sit and listen to it because if I do so I start to nod off. I’m not ... more
John Mayall & Friends: Along for the Ride    (2 of 2 found this review helpful)

John Mayall & Friends: Along for the Ride is a wonderful disc that I enjoyed for quite a while and had it as one of my main “car” discs on Redbook CD. The sound quality is excellent and the performance always gave me a lift whenever I played it. As mentioned above the combo of great musical ... more

Queen Greatest Hit I & II on SHM-SACD
June 12, 2012
I can't find any info on this SHM-SACD release but I have the Queen greatest hits UICY-15001 SHM-CD and find the sound quality mindblowingly good. It's so good that I'll buy the SHM-SACD as soon as it's available. This is one great recording. ... more
Discussion: The Doobie Brothers: The Captain and Me

I really like this album and I've had quite a few different masterings of it but I still find most of them lacking in an "emotionally involving" presentation. I have had a few RB versions including the Hoffman gold. I also have the MoFi sa-cd. Until now the best version to my liking was the original rbcd pressed in (I believe) Germany. I have been ... more
The Two Doobie Captains
December 26, 2011
I've had most copies of "The Captain And Me" starting way back with the original vinyl and incuding the original cd which was (I believe) a German pressing. I've also had the DCC gold and now I have the MoFi sa-cd. Discounting the earlier vinyl pressings I think that I preferred the sound of the original (flat transfer?) cd the best. One would ... more
'Standardized' Listening Test Bed
October 22, 2010
I guess the idea was more or less wishful thinking on my part. Over time most of us build our systems to suit our own personal preferences and listening environments therefore we may hear things quite differently. In most cases it's not difficult to recognize a poor recording/mastering. It's more difficult however to form a consensus of opinion ... more
Discussion: Diana Krall: The Girl in the Other Room

My friend has one also and he thinks its pretty good. It's just that I want to spend my resources on music I know I really like as there is so much out there. Unfortunately I have enough SACD titles that don't "move me" just sitting there gathering dust already. ... more
