Can I cheat and list the Op. 131 quartet three times? It's my favorite piece not only of Beethoven, but in all of music. Epic scale and higher excitement aren't going to be served by a chamber orchestra, anyway. It's a much different experience. Personally, I much prefer it because I love being able to hear all the inner details and have the balance come out correctly. Thankfully, time has given us a much better perspective on music from the first half of the last century. Bartok was still alive in 1942, and had yet to write what would become his most popular and well known work, the Concerto for Orchestra. I don't know how I missed this but it looks very exciting! I played the original version of Schumann 4 back in college, and I've never been able to listen to the revised version without cringing a bit because it's so heavy in comparison. Lack of tolerance is what I was talking about. I have no problem with anybody liking anything over something else. I have a problem when that something else has to be demeaned and degraded to make the point.
