First time I listened, I was stunned by the clarity, but on repeat sessions, I was put off by the slight brightness. To my ears, there is some sonic hardness, some remaining digital edge that causes fatigue. I don't find that on other SACD's. For that reason, I don't find myself going back to this ... more

This SACD is a hell of a lot of fun. These bands are swinging in full glory. The disc is engineered in a way that could have been gimmicky. I was a little worried, but it succeeds beautifully. Basie's band is often in one channel, while Ellington's band answers from the other. These are big bands. ... more

Dolphy's speechlike improvisations and Ron Carter's bowed or plucked cello solos soar over the impeccable accompaniments of bassist George Duvivier and drummer Roy Haynes. Sonics are top level, among the best of the 100+ SACD's I own. Highly recommended.

This is a fabulous performance of Mahler's 1st, but at reference levels, the quiet parts never really achieve quiet. I found a similar problem with the SFSO SACD of Mahler's 3rd.
