Schumann: The Violin Sonatas - Ulf Wallin, Roland Pöntinen      (6 of 6 found this review helpful)
  December 22, 2011

These three works probably don’t rank in the highest tier in the pantheon of violin sonatas. While they are a tick or two below Brahms’s essays in this medium, they still possess much good and often memorable material. Judging from the extant recordings, numbers 1 (59 listings) and 2 (47 listings) ... more
Georgy Catoire: Chamber Works        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)

Oh my. Sonically, this release is an unmitigated disaster in stereo. The piano quintet was recorded in a church in 2002 and there is no playback volume that yields a natural sonic picture of four string players with piano. The piano sound is distant, muddy and veiled. The violin sound is irritating ... more
Beethoven: String Trios Op. 9 - Trio Zimmermann      (8 of 9 found this review helpful)
  December 21, 2011

The Opus 9 string trios of Beethoven are the launching pad for his extraordinary run at the string quartet medium which began with the set of 6 quartets, Opus 18. In many ways, these trios share the virtues of the Op.18 quartets written 2 years later. The skilful interplay between the voices, the ... more
Borodin: Chamber Music Vol. 3 - Kinsky Trio, Prazak Quartet        (6 of 6 found this review helpful)
  December 19, 2011

This is ultimately a frustrating SACD, not because of the performances (they are quite fine) nor for the sonics (they, too, are generally fine) but for the unfulfilled promise of the music. It consists of mostly unfinished pieces by Borodin – a piano trio missing a final movement, two movements of a ... more
Stenhammar: String Quartets Nos. 3-6 - Oslo String Quartet      (6 of 7 found this review helpful)
  December 7, 2011

These are excellent string quartets, inventively written with good melodies and consonant tonalities throughout. Why they have not gotten more attention from ensembles and record companies in the past is a mystery to me. Back in the early 1990’s, Musica Sveciae released Stenhammar’s six published ... more

My point was simply that one of the forum members had the SACD in-hand on April 30th but there was no listing here at that time. That's all. Your internal policy of holding off on publicizing new releases until the pipeline is stocked will inevitably lead to situations like this from time to time. No big deal. Keep up the great work! ... more
Discussion: Sibelius: Symphonies 1 + 4

I'm another one who likes the 1st better than the 4th. I've listened twice through and the 1st comes off as very fresh and exciting. Now, the 4th is my favorite Sibelius sym so I am very picky about it. I find Vanska to be very good - but not great. It does seem to lack heaviness/weight which I believe this sym needs to be most successful. I want ... more

It appears that Robert has fallen behind in getting his SACD's entered here. There's also a Hindemith SACD of music for violin (sonatas, concerto, solo sonata) that is recently released. ... more

So? What does the SACD license say? I intuit that it does not require a "DSD" logo otherwise there would be lots of noncompliance. On the other hand, I am "guessing" that the license DOES require the SACD logo. Who cares? I don't see why this makes any difference whatsoever regarding SACD releases or their resultant sound quality. ... more
