Schumann: Piano Quartet, Piano Quintet - Mandelring Quartett      (5 of 5 found this review helpful)
  August 25, 2010

I have enjoyed the performances of the Mandelring Quartet in both Schubert and Shostakovich (especially the latter) and now we have them with piano in another “S” composer – Schumann. There is a very high level of execution in both of these chamber music staples. Starting with the piano quintet, ... more
Schumann: String Quartet, Piano Quintet - Evgeni Koroliov, Prazak Quartet        (2 of 2 found this review helpful)

Sonically, the hi-rez stereo layer of this hybrid SACD is absolutely wonderful from about 100 Hz on up. Balances between instruments are impeccable and the tonality is so very natural sounding with a presence that brings goose bumps. The two works were recorded in different venuse - the string ... more
Dohnányi: Chamber Music III - Kocian Quartet    (3 of 3 found this review helpful)
  June 7, 2010

This is the third volume of Erno von Dohnanyi’s chamber music being newly recorded and released on SACD hybrid by Praga Digitals. For those unfamiliar, Dohnanyi’s idiom is firmly tonal, late romantic with occasional Hungarian/gypsy influences. Two of his three string quartets are contained here in ... more
Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 - Vänskä      (8 of 8 found this review helpful)

The final version of Bruckner’s 4th symphony (revised 1888, published 1890) is less known today than earlier versions of this symphony. The reason, according to Professor of Music Benjamin Korstvedt (the editor of this 1888 critical edition used in this recording) is that musicologists in the early ... more
Dvorak: Symphony No. 7, Suite in A major - Fischer        (9 of 9 found this review helpful)
  June 4, 2010

Maestro Fischer extends his foray into the masterworks of Antonin Dvorak with a recording of the 7th symphony that I would categorize as brooding, dark and powerful. While not the only way to perform this piece, it is a very convincing interpretation. He builds climaxes in the first movement very ... more

There is a very good RBCD recording of the A major/1853 trio from the Trio Pro Arte on BIS (CD-99). In fact ArkivMusic shows 10 other recordings of this trio in addition to the Beaux Arts and Pro Arte so its not as rare as you may think. ... more

I've raised the issue of ratings in the past. Performance ratings are quite personal and subjective especially in repertoire that has had many past recordings. Just look at the diversity of opinions of "professional" reviewers to any given release - even the "best" performances can meet with dissension by a cranky reviewer. Sound quality, however, ... more
