U.K. - U.K.

Reviews: 1

Review by sylvian October 8, 2014 (2 of 2 found this review helpful)
Performance:   Sonics:
The second album saw departure of Bill Bruford (went on complete solo) and Allan Holdsworth (who continued his solo with his own band and gave numerous one-off collabs then).

The music of this album followed mainstraem AOR and all the tracks are penned down by Wetton / Jobson

These two brought on board american drummer Terry Bozzio (ex Missing Persons and Frank Zappa) and went on as a trio. So the main reason for retaining the name of this group U.K. evidently disappeared.

This time Eddie fulfills the role of the melody-keeper. Rhythm section sounds modern and fresh.
You can easily recognize the shift from prog to pop. Rendezvous 6.02 (see lower) and Nothing to Lose prove this. Also lyrics dropped the clichés of the previous past and tries to describe civil matters.

Two tracks of this album belongs to the microtransitional period of this group: Cesars Palace Blues and the last track Carrying No Cross - the longest of this group brings us back where its predecessor had started (sonata-like opus). These two were live only outfit while Bruford and Holdsworth were with this band.

Between the debut album and this one U.K. had managed few dates on both sides of the Atlantic and the only Live in Boston (1978, 11th of Sept.) was released much later (1999) and without the bands approval. If you can put your hands on it listen to it very carefully - it consists of the material from both studio albums so you clearly see masterful renditions of the music captured live though only on RBCD.

Surprises happen and this second and the last studio album of U.K. is accompannied with bonus track - Rendez Vous 6.02 (single version) which is completely different from the album version and very nice lest to say.

Sonic-wise it sounds only slightly worse than the debut but still far from vinyl or RBCD editions.

Recommended!
