On the program of this latest recording by the Zemlinsky Quartet devoted to Dvorak are the String Quartet in E minor N°8 Op.80 B.57 composed in 1876, the Miniatures Op.75b B 149 for two violins and alto, and The Cypresses B 152 dating from 1887. “Dvorak always knew how to beware of both excessive pathos as well as superficial lightness by seeking, parallel to his sometimes exotic quests, to develop his own roots; the string quartet, with which he was so at ease, allowed him, more than any other genre, to intensify from work to work the expressive power of his writing and to deepen his music thought.” (Bernard Fournier. Fayard). The Zemlinsky Quartet here delivers a musical language that is both intense and rigorous both in the little-known selections such as the Miniatures as well as in Opus 80 or The Cypresses. In a sound recording that is once again as rich in tonal color as it is in spatiality, this SACD can only be whole-heartedly recommended.
