Performance:   Sonics:
Beethoven's rarely heard Cantata on the Death of Emperor Joseph II is pleasant listening. The opening chor, "Death, Death" is riveting experience: Tilson Thomas conducts it peaceful and San Francisco Symphony Chorus' tone is rich, clear and spotless. Sally Matthews shines in hers beautiful solo in the Cantata's fourth movement: it sounds very similar than Fidelio's final chorus, when Leonore opens hers husband's chains! Surprising similarity!
The Second Symphony is more familiar to me, and Tilson Thomas conducts it precisely. The first movement's (12:59) slow introduction is considered here: Thomas' tempo is calmly, and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra plays magnificent! The fast main theme is also excellent, and Thomas finds many new interesting things of it. Beautiful second movement (11:26) is peaceful and touching: I have many recordings of this work, but this beats all earlier recordings. Third movement, Scherzo (3:41) sounds very good. Fourth movement (6:42) is effectively: the last chords are bright and clear. Audience's wild applause crowned the fantastic SACD album. This is welcomed issue for Beethoven's masterworks, and interesting CD for everyone, who wants to access Beethoven's music. Exclusive release!
