stereo sonics: thin and sometimes sharp sound without warmth, nearly no bass, as it has been on the LP 1980, seems to be nothing more on the masters.

I feel that this release, the last from Gabriel before his shift to digital on "So", had the best sound quality of any of the SACDs in this series. The mix on it is a little odd, as it's always been--it leans toward thin. But the clarity in all the little details here is just amazing, and the transitions in dynamics come through on this version like never before. As an example, the way the quiet intro to "No Self Control" explodes when the drum parts kick in was a goosebump moment first time I heard it. And sound of the percussive bits used as sounds effects have this really nice impact and space around them; the noises on "Intruder" and percussion on "Games Without Frontiers" come to mind as parts I find interesting to hear. Only real complaint is "Biko"--it sounds out of place and oddly recorded compared to the rest of the tracks, as it always has.

One of my favorite SACDs really; not perfect from a sonic perspective, mainly because of the somewhat weird mix, but quite good and the music is great.

This is perhaps my favorite of the Peter Gabriel releases on SACD. Sounds phenomenal and the material couldn't be better. Love everything about this SACD.
