I first played this disc about a month ago. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my listening life.

The last twenty minutes I almost couldn't breathe, it was like life was ending, the universe was winding down as the string skirls wended and wound their way to a beautiful sense of acceptance, of immortality.

Never actually having listened to Petersson before, he had been a byword for grim ,depressive dirges. To be sure this is dark, shattering, harrowing stuff but there is so much more there than that.

There are three main sections. The first is a 3 minute introduction, we could be in the vast, mapless expanses of the adagios of the 8th. or 10th. symphonies of Shostakovich.

The second section follows straight on; increasing agitation and feverish repetitions, then as Geo so eloquently and perceptively describes above, around the 25" mark, and especially following on from about 31" it is like a watershed has been reached, an accommodation or acceptance of the pain.

The final section is mesmerically beautiful, the clock of time slowing. You think how can he sustain this for 30 minutes, but it seems like it could never end, and perversely once you come to the hour mark you almost wish it would go on forever, a Winterreise of the orchestra.

Clear, slightly dry BIS house sound, I prefer a bit more lushness and warmth, but perfect for the icy, cosmic terrain of the piece.

Dear Bissie, orchestra and conductor, and all involved who have given me a chance to experience the above, thanks from the bottom of my heart.

Nick
