It was in 1996 that the project for this recording was born. It concerns the emblematic figure of François Xavier who “accompanied Portuguese missionaries, debarking in Kagoshima in 1549.” The discovery of Japan and, in particular, its people made him write: “About Japan, according to the experience we have had, I would like to let you know that we have first discovered that the people we have met are the best we have ever met.” Jordi Savall exploits, with much finesse and humility, this “musical dialogue” between two cultures, and shares with us as never before the universal language of music. “With this recording,” he states, “we wanted to evoke an imaginary musical voyage – between musicians from old Europe and those of the rising sun – in a fascinating encounter of millenary cultures and traditions which reminds us that music has always been the language of the spirit and the heart.” And, we might add, of the soul, for the profits from this recording will be transferred to aid associations for the reconstruction of Japan. In an exemplary sound recording, this new SACD also enchants visually, since the cover of the album opens to form the replica of a screen showing the arrival of the first Europeans in Japan. Here is humanism and great art.
