Performance:   Sonics:
This first volume (of five) in Marsalis series of interpretations of jazz standards is one of his better CDs from the 1980's, his best being "Black codes (from the underground)". The combination of a trumpet with a piano trio and no other horn might seem a bit sparse, but the interaction between Marsalis and his sideman - especially pianist Marcus Roberts - keeps the tension alive.

Musicwise, for those wanting one Marsalis SACD in their collection, I would however recommend the more individual compositions and performance on "Hot House Flowers" (one of the best "jazz with strings" albums I know).

This is a very crisp 16Bit/44kHz 24-channel PCM recording from 1986, made on Sony equipment in the Columbia studios. It is quite dynamic and transparent sounding, but the "low-rez" PCM origin is shown in a slight grainyness in the treble. I don't have the CD version to compare it to, but I don't think it it worth upgrading to the SACD (which is NOT multichannel as the previous review suggests).

Performance:   Sonics:
Wonderful, straight ahead performance. Crystal clear percussion and superb bassline. Subtle, not overdone trumpet playing. Surround experience is subtle but effective.

Overall, this is a joyous example of how the SACD technology takes a well crafted performance and brings it to the next level.
