Performance:   Sonics:
This should have been the definitive recording. Indeed, it is the only complete set of the Mozart Piano Sonatas to be found on SACD, and it is recorded in DSD, and, "technically", to an audiophile standard. I had not heard of Robert Silverman and had no idea what to expect, and being a skeptic, I braced myself for the playing of a dilettante - maybe a smart alecky sort of guy. But not so! These are serious, meticulously crafted performances. His playing reminds me of Richard Goode, very exact, yet thoroughly musical. Not to mince words, Silvermans's playing is absolutely lovely.

The booklet includes a photo of the serene Utah countryside. If only this set had been recorded in such a venue! I am very sorry to have to report that there are irritating background noises. I do not know if these are from the traffic, the air conditioning system, or something else. The recording was done in downtown Ogden. As it happens, I spent two nights in downtown Ogden exactly six months before these recordings were done, in 2007, and the air pollution and the traffic of Ogden really stand out in my memory. About the background noise: it is at a low enough level that it took me a few listening sessions to be sure I was not imagining things. They are at a very low level. Yet they are there.

The bottom line is that despite the background noises, I enthusiastically recommend this set.
