No one reviewed this one yet, so I will give my contribution.

As good as the SHM-SACD is, and as painstakingly as the DSD conversion was done, the original recording can't exactly be described as hi-fi, not by a long shot.

So, sometimes it can sound dirty. At times it can sound distorted and "closed". But if it weren't so, it wouldn't be the same: the occasionally gritty sound is intrinsical to this album (which, by the way, is good and historically important... but IMHO a bit overrated).

Anyway, I don't think it could have turned out much better: simply, a weird choice of album for a release in an esoteric hi-fi format!

Thought it’s not my favorite Velvets album—that honor would go to “Loaded”—there’s no denying that the Velvet’s debut was nothing short of revolutionary. In fact, it still sounds revolutionary TODAY, which is quite the achievement. Nothing sounded like it then, and nothing sounds like it now. Listening to it really is a mind-blowing experience.

Unfortunately this SHM-SACD doesn’t quite provide the “mind-blowingness” I was looking for. Yes, it sounds as natural as this lo-fi album is bound to sound, but I think the OOP Mobile Fidelity sounds just as good, if not a little clearer in the mids and highs. The SACD trumps it in overall smoothness, but the album was MEANT to sound edgy and distorted, and that intent comes through a little more on the MFSL redbook.

If you’re a diehard VU completist, this might be worth your coin, but if you already have the excellent Mo-Fi, I’d pass it by.

Well finally it's all there: the sonic flaws, the aural imperfections, the drop-outs, and the sheer horror of the Velvet Underground's first album. Drenched in reverb and heroin, the album that launched 20,000 bands finally gets it's just due. The high definition format of SHM-SACD let's us hear what is really going on. The guitars shimmer, the feedback kills your ears...it's glorious! If you have loved this album as I have, this release is the only way to appreciate it's creative glory.
