Performance:   Sonics:
Recorded from a mid hall perspective this is as close to the sound of a live performance of these concertos that I've heard; instruments, rather than being highlighted, blend beautifully in a not too resonant acoustic (no Bathroomburg Concertos here). As is well documented elsewhere (these are reissues), performances are first class, as is the SACD remastering, and the usual high production values from Alia Vox are in full vigor; in fact they’re astonishing, considering the price (with shipping total cost was $13.50 for the 2 disc set). Surely Mr. Savall is working on the smallest profit margin in the business! Bottom line; regardless of how many Brandenburg’s you already have, do consider adding this one. The price is in the "almost a gift" category and you won't be disappointed.

Performance:   Sonics:
Since I had bought several re-mastered to SACD discs by Savall previously such as Handel: Water Music; Music for the Royal Fireworks [Hybrid SACD] and Purcell: Fantasias for the Viols [Hybrid SACD] both of which were superb stereo to multi-channel re-mastering jobs, I thought this was going to be superb too. However, I was very disappointed. What I heard in multi-channel sound was an even more distant sound than the original with less detail which made the recording much less satisfying. I confirmed with the recording engineer that the surround sound for these old re-issues are artifially recreated using a Sony DRE 2000 16bit/44.1kHz machine using the acoustic signature of the original hall (I got this inf from the Alia Vox engineer himself via e-mail). I'm really tired of Alia Vox giving us old 16-bit/44.1kHz articially reproduced multi-channel SACDs. I will not buy them anymore. Besides, there is a MUCH better recording AND performance of the Brandenburg's on original instruments and in true high definition (24bit/96kHz) multi-channel sound by I Barocchisti directed by Diego Fasolis on SACD. The Diego Fasolis SACD is really an incredable performance and recording and it's in true multi-channel HD sound on the ARTS label.
