Performance:   Sonics:
A very personal album.

While this may be great for fans or poets, it is torture for the rest. I openly admit to not engaging with the intellect of this disc, because I was instantly put off by its lack of .. umm... everything else.

The songs are boring (musically). They may have a message, but when it's 1 singer and one guitar with 3 chords for 10 minutes, I find it hard to engage.

The performance of the guitar is irrelevant (introverted strumming). The vocal performance is, as expected, great. But as there's nothing to interact with, it will only fascinate those who consider themselves to be fans anyway.

The sound gains nothing from a multichannel mix or from greater dynamic range. It's an acoustic set through rock n' roll miking. Not at all interesting.

This release may be interesting on DVD-V. On SACD, it is not.

To say that Lauren Hill's Unplugged is boring is unfortunately only a sign of having given the album only a scant listen. Of ever there were a "grower" this was it. First listen: tough, second: still tough going, only once you listen to this album around five times do you start to like it. By ten, however, you are hooked into the very dark place Ms Hill found herself in late 202 when (contractually obliged to record an Unplugged) she took herself down to MTV's Times Square studios and delivered not acoustic versions of Fugees and solo hits, but rather a set of introspective tunes written in the toughest of times.
That having been said, since the sole instrumentation is a closely-miced guitar and her vocals are solidly in the middle frequencies, sadly SACD adds little other than audio clarity. An excellent album nonetheless. Surround sonics virtually inaudible, save some crowd claps and occasional coughs.
