Crusell (1775-1838) was for sure a clarinetist, but also a conductor and composer, born in Finland and whose Swedish translations of Mozart's and Rossini's operas are of great reputation. His compositions are mostly instrumental and concertos, with in particular string quartets for his instrument of predilection, and above all his three concertos for clarinet, which are the subject of the present recording, that is the Concerto in F minor Op.5, the Concerto in B flat major Op.11, and the Concerto in E flat major Op.1. Martin Frost, who sounds wonderful on these recordings accompanied by a no-less-wonderful Okko Kamu , offers us once again an enchanting and splendid musical discourse. What most are we to admire in this artist's playing? His fingering? His expressivity? His masterful respiration? His phrasing? Every work he interprets is, as always, a joy to listen to. Leading the Göteborg symphonic orchestra, Okko Kamu establishes perfect balance, playing with colors while embracing the bewitching tones of Fröst's clarinet. The miracle is here for all to hear, present both in the choice of program and in the way it is performed. Hats off!
